Sales declined $7 million as lower price and product mix ($48 million) more than offset higher volumes ($35 million). Gross profit rose $37 million, reflecting higher volumes and unit margins. Segment EBIT, a non-GAAP measure, increased to $163 million from $123 million: Reinforcement Materials was $129 million versus $94 million, and Performance Chemicals was $34 million versus $29 million. Management cited improved pricing and product mix in Reinforcement Materials and volume growth in both segments.
Liquidity, debt and financial position
At December 31, 2023, cash and cash equivalents were $244 million and revolving-credit availability was $1.0 billion. Debt included $206 million of short-term borrowings, $8 million of current long-term debt and $1.098 billion of long-term debt. The company reported $205 million of commercial paper outstanding and $124 million borrowed under its Euro revolving facility; no U.S. revolving-facility borrowings were outstanding. Cabot was in compliance with its credit-agreement covenants.
Cash from operations increased year over year, while working capital used $46 million. Investing activities used $54 million, all reported as property, plant and equipment additions. Financing activities used $29 million, including $33 million of share repurchases, $22 million of common dividends and $12 million of dividends to noncontrolling interests. Fiscal 2024 capital spending is expected to be $250–$275 million.
Material changes, outlook and risks
- Argentina currency exposure: Foreign-exchange losses were $40 million, including $33 million from a government devaluation. Cabot also recorded $12 million of investment income on cash held in Argentina. Other income (expense) was a net expense of $29 million.
- Restructuring: The company recorded $9 million of first-quarter charges: $2 million severance and $6 million accelerated depreciation for the Tianjin reinforcing-carbons closure, and $1 million severance for the Performance Chemicals reorganization and temporary idling of its Frankfurt aerogel plant. Additional fiscal 2024 charges are expected to be approximately $4 million.
- Management outlook: For Q2, Reinforcement Materials EBIT is expected to improve sequentially, supported by 2024 customer-agreement pricing and product mix and modestly higher volumes. In Performance Chemicals, seasonal volume growth is expected to be more than offset by higher fixed costs, maintenance and inventory-reduction costs. Fiscal 2024 operating tax rate guidance is 28%–30%.
- Contingencies: The respirator-liability reserve was $38 million. Cabot says claims and related costs may change in the near term and the change could be material; the potential impact cannot be determined. Other litigation and tax audits also remain, with the filing stating that the potential range of certain tax exposures cannot be quantified.
- Liquidity and operating risks: Argentina’s currency controls and restrictions on cash and supplier payments could increase costs or constrain operations. Other disclosed risks include raw-material and energy-price volatility, demand and customer risks, foreign-exchange movements, regulation, litigation and execution of expansion projects.
Management stated that disclosure controls and procedures were effective as of December 31, 2023, and reported no material change in internal control over financial reporting during the quarter.
