Management attributed higher interest income to receivables growth, while higher interest expense reflected increased average debt and funding costs. The 24.1% effective tax rate was near the prior-year 24.0%. C&I adjusted pretax income, a non-GAAP measure, was $233 million versus $236 million; pretax capital generation, also non-GAAP, was $207 million versus $239 million.

Credit quality, cash flow and liquidity

  • Credit performance: Net charge-off ratio rose to 8.66% from 7.80% year over year; consumer-loan net charge-off ratio was 8.58% versus 7.72%. The 30–89 day delinquency ratio was 2.72% versus 2.58% year over year, but improved from 3.28% at December 31, 2023. Credit-card 90+ day delinquency increased to 6.30% from 5.03% at year-end.
  • Reserves: Allowance for finance receivable losses was $2.454 billion, or 11.64% of net finance receivables, versus $2.480 billion at year-end. Management said the quarterly decrease was driven by seasonal receivables decline; estimates depend on credit performance and economic assumptions, including unemployment, inflation and interest rates.
  • Cash flow: Operating cash flow was $558 million, versus $562 million. Investing activities used $233 million and financing activities used $443 million. Cash and cash equivalents were $831 million; restricted cash was $599 million and is primarily reserved for future secured-debt payments.
  • Debt and funding: Long-term debt was $19.520 billion, down from $19.813 billion at year-end. Average daily debt was $19.702 billion versus $18.355 billion in Q1 2023. The $1.3 billion unsecured corporate revolver was undrawn; revolving conduit capacity was $6.4 billion, with $1 million drawn. Unencumbered receivables were $8.3 billion. Material changes and unusual items

  • Net income and diluted EPS declined year over year despite higher interest income, as interest expense and credit-loss provision increased.
  • Other expenses included $27 million of restructuring charges tied to strategic cost initiatives. Adjusted pretax income also excludes a $2 million net loss on debt repurchases and $1 million of acquisition-related expenses.
  • Personal-loan originations fell to $2.354 billion from $2.704 billion year over year. Auto-finance originations increased to $168 million from $113 million, and credit-card receivables rose to $386 million from $122 million.
  • On April 1, 2024, OneMain completed its acquisition of Foursight Capital, which had approximately $900 million of auto-loan receivables at March 31. Purchase accounting was still in progress. Subsequent to quarter-end, OneMain issued $1.1 billion of personal-loan-backed notes.
  • During Q1, OneMain repurchased $139 million of unsecured notes. It reported no material off-balance-sheet arrangements and no material changes to previously disclosed market risk.

Outlook, risks and contingencies

Management said it is monitoring macroeconomic conditions and intends to maintain disciplined underwriting, liquidity and diversified funding while pursuing receivables growth, new products and distribution channels, and cost discipline. It believes liquidity is adequate to operate and meet obligations. The filing provides no numerical earnings or credit-performance guidance.

Key stated risks include economic volatility, unemployment, inflation and interest rates; credit losses and the adequacy of reserves and scoring models; funding-market access, refinancing costs and substantial indebtedness; regulatory scrutiny and legal claims; cyber and operational disruptions; and insurance-related risks. Management cautioned that changes in economic forecasts or loan performance could alter reserves and provision expense. Legal matters arise in the ordinary course; some potential losses cannot be reasonably estimated, and the filing gives no clear aggregate value for possible exposure. State tax examinations cover 2017–2021; management believes the tax provision is adequate.

Investor verification priorities

  • Track charge-offs, delinquency migration and credit-card performance against reserve levels and management’s economic assumptions.
  • Assess whether lending yields and receivables growth can offset higher funding costs, provisions and operating expenses.
  • Review liquidity available for general corporate purposes separately from restricted cash and insurance investment securities, and monitor debt maturities, covenants and refinancing access.
  • Verify Foursight’s acquired portfolio, integration costs and purchase accounting in subsequent filings; also review performance and terms of the post-quarter $1.1 billion securitization.
  • Monitor the sustainability of the $1.04 quarterly dividend and share repurchases in light of earnings, cash flows, capital needs and debt restrictions.
