Operating cash flow improved from $0.925 million in the prior-year period, primarily reflecting higher revenue.

Material changes, outlook and risks

  • Revenue and profitability rebounded substantially from the pandemic-affected prior-year period. Management said advertising revenue had recovered strongly since July 2020.
  • Management expects to increase headcount by 15%–20% in calendar 2021, mainly in engineering, product and design. The filing provides no specific revenue or earnings guidance.
  • COVID-19 effects remain uncertain. Management cited dependence on economic conditions, advertising budgets, and new smartphone sales; the pandemic-related decline in smartphone sales adversely affected new-user growth.
  • Users in emerging markets made up 73% of MAU, up from 67% a year earlier. These users grew 12.6% year over year, while developed-market users declined 15.9%; lower advertising rates in emerging markets may pressure monetization.
  • Advertising and receivables are concentrated: three customers represented 31%, 22% and 12% of six-month revenue; two customers represented 47% and 22% of receivables at period end. The filing identifies these as advertising exchanges.
  • Approximately 711,000 subscribers included users under a Google Play account hold following failed payments. The filing does not quantify the related potential effect on subscriber retention or revenue.
  • The company expects all or most of its $0.218 million PPP loan to be forgiven; it submitted a forgiveness application in November 2020. No forgiveness outcome is reported in this filing.
  • The Saregama copyright case was dismissed after the injunction was lifted. Management said it did not expect other ordinary-course legal proceedings to materially affect results or financial condition.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether advertising-rate and optimization gains, and the sharp year-over-year revenue growth, are sustainable.
  • Trends in developed-market MAU, emerging-market mix, and revenue per user as smartphone sales and advertising conditions evolve.
  • Subscriber quality and retention, including the outcome and revenue impact of Google Play account holds.
  • Customer concentration and collection timing, given the significant shares of revenue and receivables tied to a small number of advertising exchanges.
  • PPP loan forgiveness status, and the dilutive impact of equity issuance and outstanding stock awards.
