Norfolk Southern has lagged the broader market as elevated operating costs, weaker freight volumes, and lingering service and safety concerns have pressured profitability. On July 23, 2026, the company reported record second-quarter revenue of $3.5 billion, up 11% year over year. However, EPS declined 4% to $3.26, while the operating ratio deteriorated to 67.6% from 62.2% a year earlier. Higher fuel costs created a 110-basis-point headwind, while the adjusted operating ratio increased 210 basis points to 65.5%, highlighting weaker operating efficiency. Merger-related expenses, restructuring and other charges, and the Eastern Ohio incident further pressured reported results. These factors weighed on investor sentiment despite adjusted EPS increasing 7% year over year.

Analysts remain somewhat bullish on NSC, with the stock carrying a consensus "Moderate Buy" rating. Among the 21 analysts covering the stock, five recommend a "Strong Buy," while the remaining 16 suggest a "Hold." Meanwhile, the average price target of $361.11 implies potential upside of 13.8% from the current share price.
