How much a stock's price changes over time is important for most investors, since price performance can both impact your investment portfolio and help you compare investment results across sectors and industries.
Another thing that can drive investing is the fear of missing out, or FOMO. This particularly applies to tech giants and popular consumer-facing stocks.
What if you'd invested in Western Digital (WDC) ten years ago? It may not have been easy to hold on to WDC for all that time, but if you did, how much would your investment be worth today?
Western Digital's Business In-Depth
With that in mind, let's take a look at Western Digital's main business drivers.
Western Digital Corporation, headquartered in San Jose, CA, develops and manufactures data storage devices and solutions. Following the separation of its Flash business, the company operates as a focused pure-play hard disk drive company. Its HDD products serve hyperscalers, cloud service providers, enterprises, client devices and consumer storage applications. The company markets its products and solutions through its sales organization, distributors, retailers and other channel partners. Its HDD portfolio includes capacity-oriented nearline drives and products for Client and Consumer end markets. Western Digital is also developing and deploying higher-capacity ePMR, UltraSMR and HAMR drives, along with high-bandwidth drive technology for data-intensive workloads.
Western Digital completed the separation of its HDD and Flash businesses on Feb. 21, 2025. The Flash business became Sandisk Corporation, an independent publicly traded company. Sandisk’s financial and operating results after the separation date are no longer consolidated into Western Digital. Historical Sandisk results before the separation date are reflected as discontinued operations in Western Digital’s financial statements.
Western Digital reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $12.9 billion. The company generates revenue from Cloud, Client and Consumer end markets.
Revenues from the Cloud end market comprised 89% of total revenues for fiscal 2026. Revenues from the Client end market and the Consumer end market were 5% and 6% of total revenues, respectively.
The company’s product roadmap includes ePMR drives with capacities up to 40 terabytes, 44-terabyte HAMR products planned for the first half of calendar 2027 and 50-terabyte products planned for the second half of calendar 2027. High-bandwidth drives are in sampling with five customers.
Bottom Line
Anyone can invest, but building a successful investment portfolio takes a combination of a few things: research, patience, and a little bit of risk. So, if you had invested in Western Digital a decade ago, you're probably feeling pretty good about your investment today.
A $1000 investment made in September 2016 would be worth $9,952.31, or a gain of 895.23%, as of September 7, 2026, according to our calculations. This return excludes dividends but includes price appreciation.
Compare this to the S&P 500's rally of 254.07% and gold's return of 217.12% over the same time frame.
Analysts are anticipating more upside for WDC.
Western Digital's fiscal fourth quarter results were driven by sustained demand for high-capacity storage as AI, cloud and data-intensive workloads expand. Cloud end market (89% of total sales) rose 43%, fueled by strong demand for high-capacity nearline drives and favorable pricing. HDDs retain favorable economics for large-scale data retention, while higher-capacity ePMR, UltraSMR and upcoming HAMR products deepen WD's position with hyperscale customers. Longer customer agreements improve demand visibility and support predictable pricing. A richer product mix, lower cost per terabyte and operating leverage are lifting margins and cash generation. A net cash balance and continued buybacks and dividends add support to shareholder returns. However, customer concentration, competitive technology shifts, execution around product transitions and a premium valuation remain risks.<
The stock has jumped 7.64% over the past four weeks. Additionally, no earnings estimate has gone lower in the past two months, compared to 6 higher, for fiscal 2026; the consensus estimate has moved up as well.
