Can Lincoln National Turn Greater Capital Flexibility Into Growth?

Lincoln National Corporation LNC is transitioning from rebuilding capital to enhancing capital flexibility and creating shareholder value. After strengthening its balance sheet, reducing leverage and addressing legacy risks, the company has greater capacity to deploy capital selectively. This stronger capital flexibility can support both business growth and more efficient shareholder returns.

The underlying financial improvement supports that transition. Second-quarter adjusted operating income available to common stockholders increased 3% year over year to $439 million, marking the eighth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Holding company liquidity stood at about $903 million after prefunding, while leverage was around 25%. With RBC above 420%, capital constraints appear less binding.

Lincoln is also reducing legacy balance-sheet risk while improving the economics of its businesses. The planned reinsurance of roughly $5.8 billion of legacy life reserves should enhance capital efficiency and cash-flow visibility. Retirement Plan Services increased operating income 32% year over year, reflecting management’s emphasis on profitable business over volume when returns fall below profitability thresholds.

The implications extend beyond the current quarter. With major capital and legacy-block priorities largely addressed, the focus can now shift toward more efficient capital deployment and new opportunities. Recent reconfirmation of the common share repurchase authorization reinforces this transition. The stronger balance sheet reduces financial constraints, but the next phase will depend on converting that flexibility into sustainable earnings growth and attractive returns on capital.

How Are Industry Players Faring?

Other major players in the insurance space, such as Prudential Financial, Inc. PRU and MetLife, Inc. MET, are pursuing similar capital deployment strategies.

Prudential Financial is benefiting from strong retirement and annuity demand, disciplined capital management and resilient earnings. In the second quarter, PRU returned $743 million to shareholders through $250 million in share repurchases and $493 million in dividends while maintaining a conservative capital position.

MetLife is supported by growth across its retirement, group benefits and insurance businesses. MET returned $1.1 billion to shareholders in the second quarter and announced a new $3 billion share repurchase authorization, underscoring its focus on capital efficiency and shareholder returns.
