Motorola Boosts Counter-Drone Security Footprint With D-Fend Buyout

Motorola Solutions, Inc. MSI has augmented its presence in the rapidly expanding counter-drone security market with the acquisition of D-Fend Solutions. The transaction adds D-Fend's field-proven counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) technology to Motorola's broader mission-critical safety and security ecosystem.

The $1.5-billion deal appears to be the call of the hour as unauthorized drones increasingly pose security risks to airports, stadiums, critical infrastructure, military installations and densely populated areas. In addition to securing another fast-growing business, D-Fend expands Motorola’s addressable market, enabling it to leverage extensive public-safety customer relationships to accelerate adoption of counter-drone technology.

D-Fend Strengthens Counter-Drone Capabilities

The D-Fend acquisition is expected to strengthen Motorola’s presence in the fast-growing counter-drone market. D-Fend’s EnforceAir platform differentiates itself from conventional systems that typically rely on jamming or kinetic interception, which can disrupt nearby communications or pose collateral risks.

EnforceAir uses radio-frequency cyber-takeover technology to detect and assume control of unauthorized drones and safely redirect them to a designated landing area. Importantly, the platform can neutralize rogue drones without affecting authorized drone operations or surrounding communications infrastructure. This makes the solution well suited for sensitive environments such as airports, large public events, urban areas and other locations where jamming or kinetic methods may be less practical.

Acquisition Bolsters Broader Drone Strategy

The buyout also complements Motorola’s expanding presence across the unmanned-systems ecosystem. Through Silvus Technologies, the company already offers resilient wireless networking solutions used in defense applications, including unmanned platforms. Its partnership with BRINC further provides public-safety agencies with drones-as-first-responders capabilities, enabling aerial situational awareness and real-time video transmission to command centers.

The addition of D-Fend broadens Motorola’s exposure across defense-focused unmanned communications, public-safety drone applications and counter-drone solutions. Moreover, the company’s established relationships with federal agencies, state and local public-safety organizations and enterprise customers could provide a ready distribution channel for D-Fend’s offerings.

Management noted that Motorola has worked with D-Fend for several years and jointly pursued opportunities with federal law-enforcement agencies prior to the transaction. The combination of complementary technologies and an established customer network could support D-Fend’s growth without requiring Motorola to build a separate go-to-market infrastructure.

Synergistic Benefits Expected From 2027

Despite the $1.5-billion purchase price and related financing costs, management expects the transaction to be modestly accretive to earnings in 2027. D-Fend’s existing profitability, healthy growth trajectory and expanding addressable market are likely to support the expected contribution.

The buyout could eventually produce a more comprehensive air-to-ground security platform, offering a product breadth that may become increasingly important as public-safety customers look to consolidate security workflows rather than deploy isolated point solutions. It could further help Motorola better compete with rivals such as Ondas Inc. ONDS, Unusual Machines, Inc. UMAC and Draganfly Inc. DPRO.
