FirstEnergy Benefits From Data-Center Demand, Systematic Investment

FirstEnergy Corp. FE benefits from rising data-center demand, regulated infrastructure investment, transmission expansion, cleaner generation initiatives and potential financing-cost relief. These factors support overall performance and long-term earnings growth, although regulatory recovery and environmental compliance remain key risks.

FirstEnergy’s Tailwinds

FirstEnergy is positioned to benefit from rising data-center electricity demand and regulated investments, which support revenue growth and improve earnings predictability. The company’s contracted and pipeline data-center demand reached 24.8 gigawatts (GW) in the second quarter of 2026, up 30% from the previous quarter, while contracted demand rose 50% to 6.4 GW.

In West Virginia, the company’s contracted and pipeline data-center demand reached 4.3 GW, rising 137% from the first quarter of 2026. FirstEnergy is also advancing the proposed 1.2-GW Maidsville Energy Center to serve future electricity demand and expects another 1.5 GW to move into contracts shortly.

The company’s systematic investment plan supports cleaner generation initiatives and upgrades its extensive transmission and distribution network. These investments improve reliability, support regulated returns and strengthen long-term earnings growth. The company deployed $2.9 billion in capital during the first half of 2026, up 19% year over year, and reaffirmed its $6 billion investment plan for 2026. Its Energize365 program includes $36 billion in investments through 2030, which is expected to support 10% rate-base compound annual growth, with about 75% of spending subject to formula-rate recovery.

The company anticipates approximately $250 million in transmission network upgrades for every 1 GW of added capacity. Investments associated with demand contracted since February 2026 are not included in the existing 2026-2030 plan.

Transmission and distribution investments enable utilities to upgrade aging infrastructure, enhance grid reliability and accommodate rising electricity demand. In addition to FE, other Zacks Utility - Electric Power companies like Eversource Energy ES, Exelon Corporation EXC and PPL Corporation PPL are making systematic investments to upgrade and strengthen infrastructure.

Eversource Energy expects to invest $26.5 billion through 2030, including $7.24 billion for transmission and $11.24 billion for electric distribution to accommodate load growth and strengthen grid reliability.

Exelon Corporation plans $41.7 billion in capital investments for 2026-2029, including $16.3 billion for electric transmission and $21.8 billion for electric distribution, supporting grid reliability and 7.9% rate base growth.

PPL Corporation plans to invest $23 billion through 2029, allocating $8 billion to transmission and $7.2 billion to distribution to strengthen grid resilience, automate operations and reduce outages.

FirstEnergy’s Headwinds

FirstEnergy faces regulatory uncertainty because base-rate requests may not receive full approval. Delays or unfavorable outcomes in Ohio, New Jersey, Maryland and West Virginia could hinder cost recovery.

Environmental regulations governing emissions, coal-combustion residuals and wastewater could also increase operating expenses and capital requirements for its coal-fired generating plants.
