  • Revenue increased 18% year over year; subscription revenue rose 17% to $1.089 billion, maintenance revenue declined 5% to $18 million, and other revenue rose 47% to $63 million. Recurring revenue was $1.144 billion, or 98% of total revenue. Net revenue retention was in the 100%–110% range, unchanged from the prior-year period.
  • Operating expenses grew 10% to $839 million. Stock-based compensation expense was $155 million, up from $116 million. GAAP net income fell despite higher operating income, reflecting the move from a $25 million income tax benefit in the prior year to $49 million of tax expense and higher net interest and other expense.
  • Cash and cash equivalents were $1.518 billion at April 30, 2022; cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities totaled $1.62 billion. Operating cash flow increased year over year, with working-capital movements—including seasonal collections—contributing to the result. Free cash flow, calculated as operating cash flow less capital expenditures, was approximately $422 million.
  • Cash and cash equivalents decreased $10 million during the quarter. Autodesk repurchased 2.058 million shares for $436 million; financing cash outflows were $460 million. Investing activities provided $31 million, including proceeds from marketable securities sales and maturities, partly offset by acquisition spending.
  • Notes payable had $2.65 billion aggregate principal outstanding; the current balance-sheet portion was $350 million. Autodesk had no borrowings under its $1.5 billion revolving facility and was in compliance with its financial covenants. The facility matures in September 2026.
  • Deferred revenue was $3.749 billion and remaining performance obligations (RPO) were $4.683 billion, each down about 1% from January 31, 2022. Autodesk expected to recognize $3.142 billion, or 67% of RPO, as revenue in the next 12 months.

Material changes and management commentary

  • Revenue grew across product families: AEC rose 17% to $518 million; AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT rose 21% to $346 million; Manufacturing rose 14% to $225 million; and Media and Entertainment rose 24% to $68 million. Growth reflected subscriptions, renewals, enterprise agreements, and acquired offerings.
  • Management attributed expense increases mainly to higher headcount, stock-based compensation, cloud hosting, sales commissions, and amortization of acquired technology and intangibles. Total spend increased 12%; revenue grew 17% on a constant-currency basis.
  • Autodesk changed the presentation of certain subscription-plan revenue, moving some amounts previously classified as subscription revenue to “Other” or “Maintenance.” Prior periods were reclassified; total revenue was unaffected.
  • Two business combinations were completed during the quarter. Total acquisition-date consideration was $114 million, including $96 million cash; $97 million was purchase consideration. The preliminary purchase price allocation included $85 million of goodwill and remains subject to adjustment.
  • Autodesk continued its hybrid-workplace facilities reductions and recorded $2 million of operating lease asset impairments. Management said facilities optimization is intended to support strategic investment, but savings and benefits are not guaranteed.
  • Autodesk suspended all new and renewal business in Russia beginning in early March 2022. Russia accounted for less than 2% of revenue in the respective prior fiscal periods cited in the filing.

Outlook, risks, and contingencies

  • The filing does not provide a clear numerical revenue or earnings forecast for the next quarter or full fiscal year. It gives directional expectations for Q2 FY2023 expenses versus Q2 FY2022: cost of revenue, marketing and sales, research and development, and general and administrative expenses expected to increase; purchased-intangible amortization expected to decrease. Expense changes as a percentage of revenue were expected to be flat except marketing and sales, expected to decrease.
  • Management said existing cash, expected operating cash flows, and available revolver capacity should meet working-capital and operating needs for at least the next 12 months, subject to business risks and uncertainties.
  • Management highlighted supply-chain disruption and inflation, labor shortages, COVID-19 developments, the war in Ukraine, foreign-exchange volatility, and economic uncertainty as factors that may affect performance. International revenue represented 66% of revenue; China had recently shown slower growth.
  • Customer and channel concentration warrants attention: Tech Data represented 36% of revenue in both periods and 28% of trade receivables at April 30, 2022. Ingram Micro represented 9% of current-quarter revenue. Autodesk said alternative distribution channels could limit disruption, but acknowledges possible temporary impacts.
  • Foreign-currency hedges reduce but do not eliminate exposure. The filing reports $896 million notional of designated cash-flow hedges and $408 million notional of non-designated contracts at quarter-end. The company also noted potential exposure to interest rates, strategic investment losses, acquisition integration, subscription renewals, cybersecurity, privacy regulation, competition, and debt service.
  • Autodesk reported $212 million of gross unrecognized tax benefits; approximately $7 million could decrease in the next 12 months through an audit settlement. The filing notes potential higher cash taxes from required capitalization and amortization of U.S. research and development expenditures beginning in fiscal 2023.
  • Legal matters include intellectual-property, commercial, employment, tax, and other proceedings. Management did not expect pending matters to materially adversely affect consolidated results, cash flows, or financial position, but said an unfavorable resolution could materially affect a particular period; a potential loss estimate was not provided.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether subscription growth, renewals, RPO, and retention metrics continue to support revenue growth; RPO can vary with contract timing, renewals, and foreign exchange.
  • How much reported earnings and margins depend on non-GAAP exclusions, particularly stock-based compensation, acquisition-related amortization, and tax items.
  • Cash conversion and repurchase pace, including the effect of buybacks on liquidity, share count, and capital available for acquisitions.
  • Debt repayment and covenant capacity, especially the $350 million principal payment due in the remainder of fiscal 2023, and the company’s ability to maintain revolver access.
  • Exposure to Tech Data and other distributors, foreign exchange, macroeconomic and geopolitical developments, and the consequences of suspending new and renewal business in Russia.
  • Acquisition integration, preliminary purchase accounting, and the realization of expected product, revenue, and operating benefits.
  • Developments in tax rules, unrecognized tax positions, legal proceedings, cybersecurity, and privacy regulation.
