Q3 revenue declined 5.5%, net income 10.1%, and diluted EPS 8.0% year over year. For the nine months, revenue declined 8.3%, net income 13.0%, and diluted EPS 10.2%. LTL tons fell 8.4% in Q3 and 11.5% year to date; tonnage per day fell 6.9% and 11.0%, respectively. Higher LTL revenue per hundredweight—up 3.1% in Q3 and 3.6% year to date—partly offset lower volume. Excluding fuel surcharges, that yield measure rose 8.9% and 8.4%.

Cash flow from operations was $1,132.4 million for the first nine months, versus $1,330.2 million a year earlier. Capital expenditures were $651.4 million before $22.2 million of property-sale proceeds; net capital expenditures were $629.1 million. Cash and cash equivalents ended at $206.6 million, compared with $186.3 million at year-end 2022. Total debt, including current maturities, was $80.0 million, down from $100.0 million; the company had no revolver borrowings and $210.0 million of available borrowing capacity after letters of credit. The company declared dividends of $0.40 per share in Q3, versus $0.30 a year earlier.

Changes and management commentary

  • Management attributed weaker revenue primarily to softer domestic economic conditions, lower LTL shipments and lower weight per shipment. Pricing discipline and higher revenue per hundredweight provided a partial offset.
  • The operating ratio worsened as overhead and other cost pressures more than offset improvements in some direct costs. Depreciation and amortization rose with investments in facilities, equipment and technology. Lower diesel prices reduced operating supplies costs; average diesel cost per gallon fell 17.0% in Q3 and 19.5% year to date.
  • Average active full-time employees fell 9.4% in Q3 and 8.2% year to date as staffing was adjusted to lower shipment levels. Management expected to hire additional employees in Q4 to match workforce capacity with shipment trends.
  • October 2023 revenue per day increased 2.0% year over year. LTL tons per day decreased 1.9%; shipments per day rose 2.7%, while weight per shipment declined 4.5%. LTL revenue per hundredweight increased 4.4%, or 8.1% excluding fuel surcharges.

Outlook, liquidity, risks and contingencies

Management estimated 2023 capital expenditures of approximately $720 million, including $260 million for service centers, $385 million for tractors and trailers, and $75 million for technology and other assets. It expects to fund investment primarily from operating cash flow and existing cash, with borrowing capacity available if needed. The company intends to continue quarterly dividends, subject to board approval, legal limits and debt covenants. A new $3.0 billion repurchase authorization becomes effective after the existing program is completed; $311.0 million remained under the existing program at September 30, 2023.

Management cited economic weakness, shipment softness, pricing competition, labor and benefit costs, fuel-price and surcharge variability, equipment and real-estate availability, weather, regulation, environmental matters, technology and cybersecurity, and legal claims among the risks to results. The company does not hedge diesel fuel. It reported compliance with debt covenants and no material changes to its previously disclosed risk factors or market-risk exposures. Ordinary-course legal matters include some class or collective-action allegations; management did not expect their resolution to materially adversely affect financial position, results or cash flows. No environmental legal proceedings meeting the company’s stated $1.0 million disclosure threshold were reported.

Most important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether LTL shipment, tonnage and weight-per-shipment trends improve, and whether October’s daily revenue growth continues.
  • Whether yield gains persist and adequately offset volume weakness, fuel-surcharge changes and cost inflation.
  • Whether the higher operating ratio stabilizes as labor capacity adjusts and capital investments add depreciation expense.
  • Execution and funding of the approximately $720 million 2023 capital expenditure plan, alongside dividends and share repurchases.
  • Future cash generation, debt-covenant headroom and developments in legal, regulatory, weather, labor, fuel and cybersecurity risks.
