Net revenue growth reflected higher sales volumes, VYVGART’s launch in September 2023, and lower distributor rebates. Revenue by product was ZEJULA $45.5 million, VYVGART $13.2 million, OPTUNE $12.5 million, NUZYRA $9.9 million, and QINLOCK $6.1 million. Higher R&D spending principally reflected increased clinical-trial and contract research/manufacturing costs; higher commercial and personnel costs contributed to increased SG&A.
Liquidity, debt, and cash flows
At March 31, 2024, cash and cash equivalents were $650.8 million, current restricted cash was $100.0 million, and short-term investments were nil. Management reported $750.8 million in cash, current restricted cash, and short-term investments and expects these resources to fund requirements for at least 12 months. The $100.0 million restricted deposit secures standby letters of credit and is not freely available for general use.
Short-term debt was $48.3 million, newly drawn under working-capital arrangements, at a weighted average rate of 3.10%. The arrangements provide borrowing capacity of approximately $164.5 million in total; the Ningbo Bank facility was undrawn at quarter-end. Cash, cash equivalents, and restricted cash declined by $39.4 million during the quarter. Investing activities provided $3.3 million, while financing activities provided $47.5 million, largely from debt proceeds.
Total assets were $988.4 million and shareholders’ equity was $762.2 million at quarter-end. No income tax expense was recorded. The company remains loss-making and reports a history of negative operating cash flows.
Notable changes, outlook, and risks
- Commercial revenue increased 39% year over year; VYVGART contributed $13.2 million, while QINLOCK and NUZYRA also grew substantially. OPTUNE revenue declined 6% year over year, though management said patient volume recovered compared with Q4 2023.
- Gross margin fell to 61.4% from 66.0%, reflecting higher cost of sales and changes in sales volume and product mix.
- Other income increased to $9.4 million, including $4.9 million in gains on equity investments and $2.8 million in government grants. Foreign currency results shifted from an $8.9 million gain to a $2.1 million loss, primarily due to RMB depreciation against the U.S. dollar.
- Management expects continued significant R&D and commercialization spending, and says revenue may grow through broader product access, reimbursement coverage, and potential future launches. The filing provides no specific revenue, earnings, or profitability guidance and states that the timing of profitability is uncertain.
- Post-quarter developments included an April 2024 NMPA supplemental filing for subcutaneous efgartigimod in CIDP and partner announcements concerning tisotumab vedotin and KarXT. These are developments after the reporting date, not Q1 results.
- Key risks include clinical and regulatory uncertainty, commercialization and funding needs, currency controls and RMB fluctuations, China-related regulatory and political risks, and dependence on partners and third parties. Management reported no material change to the risk factors in its 2023 Form 10-K, no material legal proceedings, and no material control deficiencies; disclosure controls were assessed as effective.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether revenue growth and access gains, particularly for VYVGART, persist, and how NRDL pricing and rebates affect net revenue and gross margin.
- Whether operating cash use remains elevated and how long unrestricted liquidity will support planned R&D and commercialization spending.
- Terms, floating-rate exposure, collateral, and actual utilization of the new borrowing facilities; $100.0 million of cash is restricted as collateral.
- Progress, trial results, and regulatory timing for key pipeline programs and the potential impact of milestone and royalty obligations. The filing lists up to $303.5 million in development and regulatory milestones for current clinical programs, $665.2 million for other programs, and $2,457.5 million in sales-based milestones, plus potential royalties.
- Exposure to currency movements and limits on transferring funds from Chinese subsidiaries; $506.0 million of subsidiary paid-in capital was identified as restricted net assets.
- Whether investment gains and government grants recur; Q1 results included material non-operating contributions from these items.
