Operating cash flow less capital expenditures was approximately $395 million, compared with $220 million a year earlier. At January 31, 2024, cash and cash equivalents were $1,748, current assets $4,338 and current liabilities $1,617. Long-term debt was $2,555, down from $2,735 at October 31, 2023; Agilent repaid $180 of its term loan. The term-loan balance was $420 at a 6.18% weighted-average rate, alongside $2,135 of senior notes. No borrowings were outstanding under the disclosed revolving facilities or commercial paper program. Management said available cash, operating cash flow and access to capital markets and credit lines should meet liquidity needs for at least the next 12 months and beyond.
Material changes and operating performance
- Product revenue fell 9% to $1,209; services and other revenue increased 4% to $449. Foreign exchange benefited reported revenue growth by approximately 1 percentage point.
- Revenue by segment: Life Sciences and Applied Markets $846, down 10%; Diagnostics and Genomics $407, down 6%; Agilent CrossLab $405, up 6%. Segment operating income was $236, $70 and $122, respectively.
- Revenue weakness was concentrated in pharmaceuticals and chemicals and advanced materials, with continued customer capital-expenditure pressure, particularly in China. CrossLab growth reflected demand for repair, maintenance and compliance services.

Outlook, commentary and notable items
- Management anticipates a challenging near-term macroeconomic environment, especially in China, and continued pressure on customer capital spending. It expressed optimism about longer-term growth opportunities across key markets, while expecting to address inflation through targeted pricing and cost savings. The filing provides no numerical revenue or earnings guidance.
- FY2024 capital expenditures are expected to be approximately $400, largely for expanded nucleic-acid therapeutics manufacturing capacity in Frederick, Colorado.
- The FY23 restructuring plan targets approximately $80 of annual cost-of-sales and operating-expense reductions. Approximately $49 in costs had been recorded since inception, including $3 in the quarter; remaining activities are expected to be substantially completed by fiscal year-end 2024.
- Q1 included an $8 long-lived-asset impairment and a $6 in-process research and development impairment. Goodwill testing following the segment reorganization indicated no impairment.
- CEO Michael McMullen notified the company he plans to retire May 1, 2024. The board appointed COO Padraig McDonnell CEO-elect and intends to appoint him CEO upon McMullen’s retirement.
- Agilent reported no pending legal matters it currently believes are reasonably possible of having a material impact. It disclosed ordinary-course litigation and identified economic and customer-spending weakness, China and geopolitical uncertainty, foreign exchange, tariffs, supply-chain and inventory risks, regulatory and data-privacy obligations, cybersecurity, and potential tax changes or examinations as risks.
