Products and services revenue each increased 5%. Foreign currency movements reduced reported revenue growth by 5 percentage points. Management attributed improved margins mainly to higher sales volume, targeted price increases and lower intangible amortization; currency, wages and input costs partly offset those benefits. The prior-year quarter included a $47 million net loss on equity securities, compared with $10 million in Q1 FY2023.

Revenue and segment trends

SegmentRevenueYear-over-year changeSegment operating income
Life Sciences and Applied Markets$1.033 billion+6%$314 million, versus $282 million
Diagnostics and Genomics$342 million+1%$59 million, versus $68 million
Agilent CrossLab$381 million+6%$103 million, versus $91 million

Diagnostics and Genomics was the relative weakness: management cited adverse currency, product mix and higher wages; revenue also declined in Asia Pacific, driven by China. Pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical revenue was $639 million, up from $602 million; chemicals and advanced materials revenue was $406 million, up from $373 million.

Cash, liquidity and debt

  • Cash and cash equivalents were $1.250 billion at January 31, 2023, up from $1.053 billion at October 31, 2022.
  • Operating cash flow was $296 million. Investing activities used $104 million, including $76 million of property, plant and equipment investment and $30 million for an acquisition. Financing activities used $17 million.
  • Total debt was approximately $2.971 billion: $238 million of commercial paper and $2.733 billion of long-term debt. Commercial paper carried a 4.67% weighted-average annual rate; the $600 million term loan carried a 5.40% weighted-average rate. The term loan matures in April 2025. Agilent reported no borrowings under its $1.35 billion revolving credit facility and said it was in covenant compliance.
  • Management believes cash, operating cash generation and access to capital markets and credit lines will meet liquidity requirements for at least the next twelve months and beyond.

Outlook, capital allocation and risks

  • No specific revenue or earnings guidance was provided in the supplied filing text. Management said it expects an uncertain fiscal 2023 macroeconomic environment but remains optimistic about long-term growth across key end markets, while anticipating continued interest-rate and inflationary pressures.
  • Agilent announced a planned $725 million expansion of nucleic-acid therapeutics manufacturing capacity in Frederick, Colorado. Management expected fiscal 2023 capital expenditures of approximately $500 million; some expansion spending may qualify for reimbursement incentives, but the amount was not yet known.
  • The board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.225 per share, payable April 26, 2023. A new discretionary share repurchase authorization of up to $2.0 billion commenced March 1, 2023, replacing the prior program.
  • Management highlighted uncertainty from COVID-19, macroeconomic and geopolitical conditions, inflation, currency movements, customer demand and supply-chain constraints. Inventory days on hand rose to 127 from 103 a year earlier, and days’ sales outstanding rose to 75 from 65, which management attributed in part to quarter-end shipments and growth in nucleic acid solutions.
  • Agilent paid $65 million in contingent consideration for a technical milestone related to its Resolution Bioscience acquisition. It also recorded $30 million of acquisition cash outflow, including the Avida Biomed acquisition. Management reported no pending legal matters it believed were reasonably possible of having a material impact.
  • The effective tax rate increased to 14.1% from 11.3%, primarily reflecting mandatory capitalization of research and development expenses under a tax-law change; stock-compensation tax benefits and recognition of previously unrecognized foreign tax benefits partly affected the current-period provision.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether reported growth and margin gains persist after considering the 5-percentage-point foreign-exchange headwind and the weaker Diagnostics and Genomics results.
  • Whether elevated inventory days and receivables collection time normalize, and how they affect cash conversion.
  • Funding, timing, expected returns and any reimbursement incentives for the Frederick capacity expansion, alongside the approximately $500 million fiscal 2023 capital expenditure estimate.
  • Debt refinancing and interest-cost implications, including the commercial-paper balance and the term loan’s 2025 maturity.
  • Developments in tax examinations and unrecognized tax benefits; management said possible changes over the next twelve months could be significant but could not estimate a range.
