Guidance, Outlook, Risks, and Unusual Items
- The filing does not provide a specific updated earnings or revenue guidance range.
- Management expects COVID-19 testing demand to remain unpredictable; the future effect on results is uncertain.
- Gross margin was pressured by lower COVID-19 test sales, foreign exchange, and higher manufacturing input costs, partly offset by margin-improvement initiatives and the nonrecurrence of 2022 nutrition recall costs.
- Abbott recorded approximately $49 million of employee-related restructuring charges and $17 million of fixed-asset impairment charges during the first six months of 2023. The remaining restructuring accrual was $157 million at June 30, 2023.
- Research and development included a $45 million impairment charge for certain indefinite-lived intangible assets in the Medical Devices segment.
- Legal and environmental proceedings had an estimated possible loss range of approximately $25 million to $35 million, with an accrued balance of approximately $30 million. Management does not expect the matters to have a material adverse effect.
- Abbott believes approximately $100 million of gross unrecognized tax benefits could decrease within the next twelve months as tax matters are resolved.
- Abbott maintained investment-grade ratings of AA- from Standard & Poor’s and Aa3 from Moody’s. It had $5.0 billion of credit lines expiring in 2025 and expected to maintain an investment-grade rating.
- Abbott repurchased approximately 7 million shares for $725 million during the first six months and had $1.709 billion remaining under its repurchase authorization. Quarterly dividends were $0.51 per share, up 8.5% from $0.47 in the prior-year periods.
Investor Verification Items
- Verify the pace and volatility of COVID-19 diagnostic test demand and its effect on Diagnostic Products revenue and margins.
- Assess whether underlying growth excluding COVID-19 sales and foreign exchange is sustainable, particularly in Medical Devices and Nutritionals.
- Review gross-margin recovery, manufacturing input costs, foreign exchange exposure, and the effect of restructuring initiatives.
- Monitor cash generation, inventory growth, acquisition spending, share repurchases, dividends, and debt maturities.
- Evaluate integration and valuation risks related to the CSI acquisition, including the preliminary goodwill and intangible-asset allocations.
- Review regulatory, reimbursement, competitive, litigation, environmental, tax, and product-recall risks described in the filing and the 2022 Form 10-K.
