DTE Energy's revenue and earnings include substantial Energy Trading activity, which is reported on a gross basis for revenues and costs and is sensitive to commodity prices and mark-to-market timing.

  • Cash flow: DTE Energy generated $2.375 billion of operating cash flow in the first nine months, up from $1.412 billion in 2022. Capital expenditures were $2.813 billion, including $2.772 billion for utility projects, resulting in net investing cash outflow of $2.941 billion.
  • Liquidity: Cash, cash equivalents, and restricted cash totaled $66 million at September 30, 2023, compared with $43 million at December 31, 2022. Management reported approximately $1.8 billion of available liquidity, primarily cash and unused revolving credit capacity. DTE Energy had $1.217 billion of short-term borrowings and $594 million of current long-term debt, including securitization bonds and finance leases.
  • Debt: DTE Energy's long-term debt was $18.542 billion, excluding current maturities, at September 30, 2023, versus $16.873 billion at year-end 2022. DTE Electric's long-term debt was $10.325 billion, excluding current maturities. Total funded debt-to-capitalization ratios were 64% for DTE Energy and 54% for DTE Electric, within applicable covenant limits.
  • Capital program: DTE Energy expects approximately $4.2 billion of 2023 capital expenditures, including approximately $3.2 billion for DTE Electric. Planned 2023-2027 capital investments are estimated at $18 billion for DTE Electric and $3.6 billion for DTE Gas.

Material changes versus the prior comparable period

  • DTE Energy nine-month net income increased $160 million, or approximately 20%, primarily because Energy Trading improved to $234 million of net income from an $80 million loss, while DTE Vantage increased to $109 million from $68 million and Gas increased to $190 million from $179 million.
  • Third-quarter DTE Energy net income declined $55 million, or approximately 14%, primarily because Electric earnings fell to $268 million from $363 million and Corporate and Other losses increased to $52 million from $35 million. These declines were partly offset by higher DTE Vantage, Gas, and Energy Trading earnings.
  • DTE Energy revenue declined 45% in the third quarter and 37% for the nine-month period, principally because of lower Energy Trading gas prices and volumes. Energy Trading revenue fell to $893 million from $3.024 billion in the quarter and to $3.365 billion from $8.059 billion year to date, while the segment remained profitable because related purchased-power and gas costs also declined.
  • DTE Electric revenue declined $221 million in the third quarter and $573 million for the nine-month period. Drivers included lower power supply cost recovery, unfavorable weather, lower base sales, and lower interconnection sales. Retail electric sales declined approximately 6% for the quarter and 5% year to date.
  • DTE Electric's operating income declined $151 million for the nine-month period, primarily reflecting lower revenue, despite lower fuel and purchased-power costs and lower operation and maintenance expense. Higher depreciation, interest expense, and taxes also reduced earnings.
  • Operating cash flow improved by $963 million year to date, supported by higher net income, depreciation, deferred taxes, accounts receivable collections, and regulatory asset and liability activity.

Guidance, outlook, risks, contingencies, and unusual items

  • Management outlook: DTE Energy expects approximately $3.2 billion of 2023 operating cash flow and approximately $4.2 billion of 2023 capital expenditures. The company expects sufficient internal and external resources to fund operations, capital investment, debt service, and dividends. It expects approximately $0.8 billion of 2023 common-stock dividends.
  • Regulatory proceedings: DTE Electric requested a $622 million base-rate increase and a return-on-equity increase from 9.9% to 10.25%; a final Michigan Public Service Commission order was expected in December 2023. The filing text does not provide the final outcome.
  • Coal retirement and regulatory assets: An approved Integrated Resource Plan provides for Belle River conversion to natural-gas peaking resources in 2025-2026 and Monroe unit retirements in 2028 and 2032. Approximately $2.7 billion of plant assets was reclassified to a long-term regulatory asset in the third quarter. DTE Electric plans to securitize approximately $1.05 billion of plant costs and recover approximately $1.6 billion of remaining Monroe costs through a regulatory asset.
  • Post-period financing: On November 1, 2023, DTE Electric issued $602 million of securitization bonds. Approximately $300 million was expected to retire debt and approximately $300 million was expected to be distributed to DTE Energy as a special dividend. DTE Gas also issued $295 million of first-mortgage bonds in October 2023.
  • Market and earnings volatility: Energy Trading's results are exposed to commodity prices, mark-to-market accounting, contract timing, regional transmission organization rules, and the mismatch between derivative and non-derivative accounting. A 10% change in modeled interest rates would change the fair value of DTE Energy's long-term debt by approximately $717 million for an increase and $776 million for a decrease.
  • Collateral and credit exposure: A downgrade below investment grade could require up to $437 million of cash or letters of credit under ratings-trigger provisions. DTE Energy reported $1.075 billion of net trading-counterparty credit exposure, principally to investment-grade or internally assessed investment-grade counterparties.
  • Environmental and legal matters: DTE Electric estimates $481 million of capital expenditures for coal-combustion-residual and effluent-limitation requirements, including $343 million during 2023-2027. Environmental rulemaking, including proposed greenhouse-gas and legacy coal-ash rules, could increase costs, although the ultimate financial impact was not estimable. A Ludington plant contract dispute with Toshiba includes counterclaims of approximately $15 million; DTE Electric cannot predict the outcome or financial impact.
  • Unusual items: DTE Energy's effective tax rate was 9.8% for the first nine months versus no tax expense reported in the prior-year period. Tax benefits included state audit settlement benefits and a federal tax claim. DTE Vantage also recorded a $17 million gain from a change in a Steel business asset-retirement-obligation estimate.

Important facts investors should verify

  • Review the final MPSC decision on DTE Electric's $622 million rate-case request and the approved return on equity.
  • Confirm the financial and regulatory effects of the November 2023 $602 million securitization financing, including debt retirement and the special dividend to DTE Energy.
  • Assess whether DTE Energy's approximately $4.2 billion 2023 capital plan and multiyear utility investments can be recovered through rates without weakening affordability or credit metrics.
  • Monitor Energy Trading's recurring profitability separately from mark-to-market and timing-related gains and losses.
  • Evaluate exposure to interest rates, commodity prices, ratings-trigger collateral requirements, counterparty credit risk, and environmental compliance costs.
  • Track the Ludington litigation, coal-ash and effluent rules, greenhouse-gas regulation, and other proceedings for potential unrecorded liabilities or capital requirements.
