Garmin Ltd. — Q2 2023 Form 10-Q
Reporting period: 13 weeks ended July 1, 2023; first-half comparisons cover 26 weeks. Amounts below are in U.S. dollars unless noted. Garmin designs and sells GPS-enabled devices and related services across fitness, outdoor, aviation, marine and auto OEM markets. The filing is unaudited and notes that seasonality, product introductions and OEM schedules may make interim results unrepresentative of the full year.

Q2 sales increased 6% year over year, while operating income fell 3%; net income rose 12%, aided in part by higher interest income and a swing to foreign-currency gains. H1 sales rose 2%, net income rose 4%, and operating income declined 8%. Q2 operating expenses increased 9%, with higher R&D, personnel and IT costs contributing to margin pressure.
Segments and material changes
- Q2 sales: Fitness +23%, outdoor −3%, aviation +6%, marine −11%, and auto OEM +77%. Fitness growth reflected demand for advanced wearables; auto OEM growth primarily reflected domain-controller shipments. Outdoor’s adventure-watch growth was offset by declines elsewhere; marine softness reflected promotion timing and lower chartplotter sales.
- H1 sales: Fitness +18%, outdoor −15%, aviation +14%, marine approximately flat, and auto OEM +41%. Outdoor was the largest segment by sales in H1, but its share of sales declined to 31% from 38%.
- Q2 consolidated gross margin contracted 120 basis points, primarily due to segment mix. Auto OEM continued to report operating losses: $17.5m in Q2 and $37.4m in H1, partly reflecting program investment.
- In January 2023, Garmin combined consumer auto with outdoor; comparative segment figures were recast, without changing consolidated results.
Liquidity, cash flow and capital
- At July 1, 2023, cash and cash equivalents were $1.43bn and marketable securities were $1.35bn, or approximately $2.8bn combined. Current assets were $4.11bn versus current liabilities of $1.45bn.
- The balance sheet reports no borrowings or other debt balances; it does report operating lease liabilities. Total assets were $7.87bn and stockholders’ equity was $6.12bn.
- H1 operating cash flow improved to $552.9m, primarily because inventory consumed less cash than in the prior-year period, partly offset by lower receivables collections. Investing cash outflow was $70.1m, versus $397.2m, primarily reflecting net securities redemptions rather than purchases. Financing cash outflow was $337.1m, including $279.4m of dividends and $70.2m of share repurchases.
- Inventory decreased to $1.40bn from $1.52bn at year-end. Garmin reported $702.5m of inventory purchase obligations, including $496.1m due within 12 months.
- Shareholders approved a fiscal 2023 dividend of $2.92 per share in four installments. The $300m repurchase authorization expires December 29, 2023; approximately $26.8m remained available at quarter-end.
Outlook, risks and unusual items
- Management said existing cash balances and operating cash flow should be sufficient for projected working capital, capital expenditures and other cash requirements. No consolidated revenue or earnings guidance is provided in the supplied filing text.
- Management expects auto OEM to continue experiencing operating losses through 2023 because of ongoing program investment.
- Management cited high inflation, rising interest rates, consumer-behavior changes, and potential supply-chain component shortages, longer lead times, cost fluctuations and logistics constraints. The effects remain uncertain; the filing reports no material change in previously disclosed risk factors.
- Approximately 99% of available-for-sale securities were in an unrealized loss position, with $104.8m of gross unrealized losses. Garmin attributed declines primarily to economic conditions and interest rates, reported no credit-loss allowance, and said it did not intend—and was not more likely than not required—to sell before recovery.
- Management did not believe material losses from legal contingencies were reasonably possible in aggregate based on information then available, while cautioning that outcomes cannot be predicted with certainty. The filing also reports approximately $376m of open commitments that may be noncancellable obligations with remaining terms over one year.
- Foreign-currency gains were $10.8m in Q2 and $18.5m in H1, compared with losses in the prior-year periods; interest income also increased. These items helped support reported net income despite lower operating income.
Key facts for investors to verify
- Whether fitness and aviation growth offsets continued outdoor weakness and marine volatility, including promotion timing.
- How auto OEM program investments, shipment growth and product mix affect the segment’s path to profitability after 2023.
- Whether operating-expense growth and mix pressures continue to weigh on consolidated operating margins.
- The duration and cash-flow impact of inventory purchase commitments, supply-chain risks and the securities portfolio’s unrealized losses.
- Actual full-year results versus management’s liquidity assessment; the filing does not provide clear consolidated numerical guidance.
