Reported operating margin was 44.3%, versus 42.9% a year earlier. Excluding specified charges, operating income rose 2%, while adjusted operating margin declined to 44.9% from 46.0%, reflecting inflationary pressures and higher SG&A. Adjusted diluted EPS was $2.70, up 2% after excluding specified charges in both periods. The effective tax rate was 19.9%, compared with 20.5%.
Revenue growth reflected higher company-operated sales and franchised revenue. Comparable sales increased 1.9% globally: U.S. +2.5%, International Operated Markets +2.7%, and International Developmental Licensed Markets -0.2%. Systemwide sales increased 3% in reported and constant currencies. Franchised restaurant margins were $3.096 billion, up 4%; company-operated restaurant margins were $320 million, up 6%.
Liquidity, debt and capital allocation
Cash and equivalents were $838 million at March 31, versus $4.579 billion at year-end. Current assets were $4.057 billion and current liabilities $4.886 billion. Total debt, including current maturities, was approximately $37.368 billion, down from $39.345 billion at December 31, 2023; long-term lease liabilities were $12.828 billion. Shareholders’ equity remained in deficit at $4.833 billion.

Financing cash outflow was $3.661 billion, including $1.285 billion of long-term debt repayments, $918 million of treasury-stock purchases, and $1.206 billion of dividends paid. Management stated that operating cash flow and credit capacity support investment, debt service, dividends, and repurchases.
Material changes and unusual items
- On January 30, McDonald’s paid $1.8 billion for an additional 28% stake in Grand Foods Holding, increasing ownership to 48%. It remains a minority investor and continues equity-method accounting.
- Operating income included $35 million of pre-tax impairment and other charges, primarily related to the Accelerating the Organization initiative; the prior-year comparable amount was $180 million. The note separately reports $44 million of restructuring costs incurred during Q1, primarily consulting-related; the filing does not clearly reconcile this figure with the $35 million income-statement charge.
- Interest expense rose 13%, primarily due to higher average interest rates and debt balances. The company repurchased 3.2 million shares during the quarter and declared dividends of $1.67 per share.
- Foreign-currency translation had no significant impact on consolidated operating results. The company reported no subsequent events requiring disclosure and no material changes to legal-proceedings or market-risk disclosures.
Outlook and management commentary
For 2024, management expects net restaurant unit expansion to contribute nearly 2% to Systemwide sales growth in constant currencies; SG&A of about 2.2% of Systemwide sales; operating margin in the mid-to-high 40% range; interest expense growth of 9%–11%; and an effective tax rate of 20%–22%. Capital expenditures are expected to be $2.5–$2.7 billion. The company plans more than 2,100 gross restaurant openings and expects over 1,600 net additions. Management expects free-cash-flow conversion in the 90% range.
The company expects the war in the Middle East to continue negatively affecting Systemwide sales and revenue while it persists, particularly in International Developmental Licensed Markets. It provided an insignificant amount of franchisee assistance during Q1 and says assistance may continue. Management also expects up to $250 million of restructuring charges in 2024 related to Accelerating the Organization; that initiative is expected to continue through 2027.
Key risks and investor verification points
- Verify comparable-sales and Systemwide-sales trends by market, including the continuing Middle East impact and the effect of pricing, guest counts, and currency.
- Monitor inflation in food, labor, and other operating costs, and whether margin pressure persists despite revenue growth.
- Assess liquidity and capital allocation after the China investment, debt repayments, dividends, and share repurchases; cash fell substantially during the quarter.
- Track debt costs and the outlook for interest expense, as well as the company’s capacity to fund development and shareholder returns.
- Reconcile the $35 million reported charge with the $44 million of restructuring costs incurred, and monitor the expected 2024 restructuring expense.
- Consider risks cited by the company, including franchisee financial health and execution, competition and affordability, geopolitical disruption, supply-chain and labor pressures, cybersecurity and technology transformation, and legal or regulatory changes.
