Total production declined 4 percent from 2021, while average realized prices excluding risk management increased to $54.49/BOE from $38.08/BOE. Oil and plant condensate represented 34 percent of production, other NGLs 17 percent and natural gas 49 percent.

Material changes versus the prior comparable period

  • Revenue increased 44 percent, primarily because of higher commodity prices, despite lower production volumes.
  • Operating income increased by $2,334 million and net earnings increased by $2,221 million.
  • Cash from operating activities increased $737 million, but realized commodity and foreign-exchange risk-management losses increased to $2,613 million from $1,362 million.
  • Capital expenditures increased $312 million, reflecting higher activity, project timing and inflationary pressures.
  • Production declined from 533.9 MBOE/d to 510.0 MBOE/d, including lower Canadian liquids and natural gas volumes.
  • Total long-term debt declined by $1,216 million. Ovintiv redeemed $1.0 billion of senior notes, repurchased approximately $565 million of senior-note principal and reported no borrowings under its revolving credit facilities.
  • Shareholder returns increased: dividends rose to $239 million, or $0.95 per share, and the company repurchased approximately 14.7 million shares for $719 million.
  • Proved reserves increased 15.4 MMBOE to 2,273.6 MMBOE. Extensions and discoveries of 370.6 MMBOE exceeded negative revisions of 189.2 MMBOE and 186.2 MMBOE of production.

Guidance, outlook, risks and unusual items

For 2023, management expects capital investment of approximately $2,150 million to $2,350 million; total production of approximately 500.0 to 525.0 MBOE/d; oil and plant condensate production of 165.0 to 175.0 Mbbls/d; other NGLs production of 80.0 to 85.0 Mbbls/d; and natural gas production of 1,525 to 1,575 MMcf/d. Expected upstream transportation and processing costs are $9.00 to $9.50/BOE, upstream operating expenses are $4.00 to $4.50/BOE, and production, mineral and other taxes are expected to be 4 to 5 percent of upstream revenues.

At December 31, 2022, Ovintiv had hedged approximately 38.0 Mbbls/d of expected 2023 oil and condensate production and 397 MMcf/d of expected natural gas production. Management expects significant cash flow in excess of capital expenditures and intends to maintain a relatively flat production profile while prioritizing high-margin liquids development, debt reduction and shareholder returns.

  • Commodity prices, regional differentials, inflation, interest rates, foreign exchange and geopolitical conditions remain major drivers of results.
  • Risk-management contracts generated a significant 2022 cash loss and may limit upside participation when commodity prices rise. Derivative fair-value changes can also create earnings volatility.
  • Transportation and processing commitments totaled $5,156 million, with $790 million due within one year. Total disclosed commitments, including drilling and field services and building leases, were $5,504 million.
  • Ovintiv reported maximum potential exposure of approximately $1,436 million related to certain VMLP gathering and processing commitments, although the eventual payout is highly uncertain.
  • The company faces extensive environmental, methane, climate, hydraulic-fracturing, permitting and Indigenous-rights regulation. Potential development constraints in the Blueberry River First Nation claim area in British Columbia remained subject to implementation details.
  • Legal proceedings arise in the ordinary course of business; management did not expect them to have a material adverse effect, but unfavorable outcomes could materially affect earnings when estimable.
  • The filing identifies cybersecurity, counterparty, insurance, reserve-estimation, tax and asset-retirement risks. The company also had $3,176 million of outstanding unsecured senior notes and $393 million of commercial paper at year-end.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Reconcile reported net earnings and margins for the $1,299 million deferred-tax valuation-allowance reversal and the $1,867 million net risk-management loss.
  • Assess sensitivity to oil, NGL and natural gas prices, including the impact of 2023 hedges and regional basis differentials.
  • Review the sustainability of 2023 capital spending, production guidance and expected free cash flow under lower commodity-price scenarios.
  • Verify debt maturities, commercial-paper refinancing and the availability and covenants of the $3.5 billion revolving credit facilities.
  • Evaluate transportation, processing, take-or-pay and VMLP commitments relative to proved developed reserves and expected production.
  • Review reserve revisions, the 43 percent proved-undeveloped reserve mix and the assumptions used for reserve pricing and development plans.
  • Monitor regulatory developments involving methane emissions, carbon costs, hydraulic fracturing, permitting and Indigenous consultation in Canada and the United States.
