Material changes and operating metrics

  • Revenue increased 15%, principally from customer growth, including customers from the Sinergise acquisition, and strength in civil government and defense and intelligence. Growth was partly offset by $3.8 million of net contraction among existing customers, primarily slower commercial customer development.
  • Cost of revenue grew 17%, faster than revenue, partly reflecting higher satellite depreciation, partner and subcontractor costs, hosting costs, and acquired-intangible amortization. Gross margin declined to 52% from 53%.
  • Research and development, sales and marketing, and general and administrative expenses fell 9%, 7%, and 11%, respectively. The lower operating expenses helped reduce operating and net losses.
  • Customer count rose 14% year over year to 1,031. Net dollar retention was 100% versus 98%; including winbacks, it was 101% versus 99%. Recurring ACV was 95% versus 93%.
  • Remaining performance obligations were $124.9 million, with about 81% expected to be recognized within 12 months and 98% within 24 months. Backlog, which also includes cancellable contract value and certain unfunded orders, was $219.8 million, down from $242.4 million at January 31, 2024.

Outlook, risks, and unusual items

The filing provides no specific quarterly or full-year revenue or earnings guidance. Management expects capital expenditures and working-capital requirements to increase as Planet grows, and anticipates continued investment in software, analytics, sales, and new satellite technologies. It also notes that losses may continue in the near term. The company cited seasonality, customer contract timing and renewals, commercial customer expansion, and the pace of customer adoption as factors that may affect results.

  • Planet recognized $1.1 million of other income, primarily from derecognizing a $1.3 million liability because settlement was no longer considered probable.
  • Operating cash use improved year over year, but the company remained loss-making. Cash flow benefited from working-capital movements, including collections of receivables, and should be assessed alongside recurring cash generation and investment needs.
  • Planet has $123.4 million of minimum Google hosting commitments through January 2028. Google is also a shareholder and a related-party supplier; Q1 expense for Google hosting and other services was $7.0 million.
  • One customer represented 18% of Q1 revenue. No customer represented 10% or more of accounts receivable at period end.
  • Risks include dependence on regulatory approvals, government contract cancellation or funding provisions, seasonality, competition, and potential need for additional financing. The filing reports no material change to previously disclosed risk factors, no material legal proceedings, and no material control deficiencies.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether customer expansion and renewals can offset the reported contraction in commercial accounts and support revenue growth.
  • How gross margins, operating cash flow, and capital spending evolve as Planet develops its next-generation Pelican and medium-resolution satellites.
  • The timing and realizability of RPO and backlog, including the cancellable and unfunded portions excluded from RPO.
  • The scale of Google hosting commitments, related-party spending, and potential reliance on a single major supplier.
  • The effects of stock-based compensation and potential equity dilution; Q1 stock-based compensation expense was $13.1 million, and substantial outstanding awards and potential shares were excluded from diluted loss per share as anti-dilutive.
