Revenue from perpetual software licenses, hardware and other declined 38% to $8 million, while consulting services revenue declined 7% to $69 million. Foreign currency movements reduced reported total revenue by approximately 1%.
Operating expenses increased 6% to $236 million, including SG&A of $161 million and research and development expense of $75 million. Management attributed the increase primarily to higher stock-based compensation, reorganization costs and additional cloud and AI/ML development spending.
Liquidity, Cash Flow and Debt
- Cash and cash equivalents were $337 million at March 31, 2024, compared with $486 million at December 31, 2023. Including restricted cash, total cash was $338 million.
- Cash used in financing activities was $150 million, primarily reflecting $124 million of common-stock repurchases and $20 million of finance lease payments.
- Teradata repurchased approximately 3.2 million shares for approximately $129 million, including dilution-offset purchases, at an average price of $40.57 per share. Approximately $427 million remained available under the open-market repurchase authorization at quarter-end.
- The company had $500 million of term-loan principal outstanding and no borrowings under its $400 million revolving facility. The revolving facility therefore had $400 million of available capacity.
- Teradata was in compliance with its credit-facility covenants. The blended all-in interest rate on the Credit Facility was 4.31% in Q1 2024.
- Management stated that existing cash, operating cash flow and available revolving credit capacity should be sufficient for working capital and other requirements for at least the next twelve months, subject to business and market conditions.
Material Changes Versus the Prior Comparable Period
- Public Cloud ARR grew strongly, while Total ARR declined modestly as subscription ARR and legacy maintenance and software-upgrade-rights ARR decreased, partly because customers migrated to cloud offerings and partly because of on-premises erosion.
- Recurring revenue was essentially unchanged, but its gross margin declined because of a greater mix of public-cloud revenue and lower annual upfront on-premises subscription revenue.
- Americas revenue declined 5%, EMEA revenue increased 7%, and APJ revenue declined 6%. APJ results continued to reflect the wind-down of direct operations in China.
- Profitability weakened materially because of lower gross profit and higher operating expenses.
- Operating cash flow and free cash flow declined substantially, driven by lower net income, working-capital movements, lower billings and changes in deferred revenue.
- Foreign currency expense declined to $9 million from $18 million, partially offsetting the earnings decline. A $2 million pretax loss was recognized on an Argentina Blue Chip Swap transaction.
Guidance, Outlook, Commentary and Risks
- Management expects Total ARR growth in 2024 to be driven primarily by customer expansion and expects Public Cloud ARR growth to be driven by expansion and migration.
- Based on exchange rates as of April 30, 2024, management estimated a 2.0% to 2.5% negative currency-translation impact on full-year 2024 reported revenue.
- Management estimated a full-year 2024 effective tax rate of approximately 26%, including approximately $3 million of expected GILTI tax expense. The Q1 effective tax rate was 37.5%, compared with 31.0% in Q1 2023.
- Management cited elongated deal-closing cycles, which have pushed anticipated transactions into future quarters.
- Material risks include slower cloud adoption or customer migrations, on-premises revenue erosion, competition, foreign-currency volatility, dependence on operating cash flow, interest-rate exposure, customer credit risk and potential disruptions involving Flex or other preferred suppliers.
- The company is implementing a global cloud ERP system in phases during 2024. Management reported that the implementation had not materially affected internal control over financial reporting as of March 31, 2024, but future phases will require additional controls testing.
- The company’s litigation with SAP remains active in part. Certain claims were dismissed or settled, while remaining claims and counterclaims in the TD-SAP 1 matter are stayed pending a Ninth Circuit appeal. The company stated that the likelihood and potential range of loss on SAP’s remaining patent counterclaims cannot currently be determined.
- The filing reported no material changes to previously disclosed market-risk factors or risk factors.
