United Therapeutics Just Sent Liquidia Stock Lower After Patent Battle

Liquidia (LQDA) stock closed meaningfully lower on Thursday after United Therapeutics (UTHR) secured a major victory against the biopharmaceutical firm in a U.S. District Court. The Delaware court ruled that LQDA’s flagship pulmonary hypertension drug Yutrepia infringes on two valid claims of UHTR’s patent number 11,826,327.

Following the recent crash, Liquidia shares are trading about 70% below their recent high.

Why the Ruling Matters for Liquidia Stock

The court’s decision represents a major blow to LQDA shares. United plans to seek an order requiring the removal of the key indication — pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD) — from the Yutrepia label.

Because Yutrepia accounts for virtually all of Liquidia’s current sales and market value, losing this market or facing substantial patent infringement damages and potential ongoing royalties dampens its core commercial growth.

While Liquidia plans to appeal the decision, the near-term overhang has investors pricing in heightened regulatory risks, potential injunctions, and aggressive legal pursuit from market-leader United Therapeutics.

Should You Buy LQDA Shares at Current Price?

Buying the crash in Liquidia shares carries immense risk, even though they are now trading at a major discount to their recent peak.

While speculative investors may be tempted by potential appellate reversals or alternative royalty settlements, LQDA’s near-total reliance on Yutrepia makes this binary litigation risk exceptionally dangerous.

If the District Court grants United Therapeutics’ request to strip the lucrative PH-ILD indication from Yutrepia’s label or issue an outright injunction, Liquidia’s entire revenue model will crumble.

Until there’s regulatory and judicial clarity surrounding potential damages, royalty burdens, or appeal timelines, conservative investors must avoid catching this falling knife, as unresolved legal overhangs often limit near-term recovery.

LQDA has crashed below its key moving averages (MAs) as well, reinforcing that bears are now firmly in control across multiple timeframes.

How Wall Street Recommends Playing Liquidia

Heading into Oct. 1, the consensus rating on Liquidia stood at “Moderate Buy,” with a bullish mean price target of nearly $107.

However, it’s reasonable to expect significant downward revisions as analysts move to bake in this legal overhang into their estimates for LQDA stock in the weeks ahead.
