AES Corporation Stock Outlook: Is Wall Street Bullish or Bearish?

The AES Corporation (AES), based in Arlington, Virginia, is a global power generation and utility company with operations spanning electricity production, wholesale power markets, and regulated utility networks.

With a market cap of approximately $10.6 billion, the company generates electricity from both conventional and renewable sources while also buying, selling, transmitting, and distributing power across its markets.

On the price performance front, AES stock has struggled to keep pace with the broader market, gaining 5.8% over the past 52 weeks compared with an 11.1% return for the S&P 500 Index ($SPX). The same pattern has carried into 2026, with AES stock rising 3.4% year-to-date (YTD), well behind the benchmark's 10.7% advance.

The picture is somewhat different across the utilities sector, where performance has been less impressive. The State Street Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLU) has fallen 3.2% over the past 52 weeks, although it has managed to turn positive in 2026 with a 1.7% YTD gain. Against this backdrop, AES delivered a modest advance despite its wider-market underperformance.

AES' modest gains have been accompanied by stronger operating performance and rising electricity demand, giving investors some encouraging signs. In Q2 FY2026, revenue increased 19.9% year over year (YOY) to $3.42 billion, while adjusted EBITDA surged 32.1% to $889 million, reflecting improved business momentum.

Much of that growth came from stronger contributions from U.S. development activity, higher spot-market electricity sales, improved retail margins at AES Ohio, and favorable energy-derivative results. Yet while operations gained traction, the company's financial position looked less reassuring.

As of June 30, 2026, AES carried $31.7 billion in gross debt, while first-half capital expenditures jumped nearly 32% to $3.41 billion. The growing funding requirements, coupled with higher interest expenses, remain a concern. Uncertainty over renewable-energy policy and the pending take-private transaction has further clouded sentiment and growth expectations.

These concerns are reflected in the earnings outlook as well. For FY2026, ending in December, analysts anticipate diluted EPS of $2.02, representing a 13.7% YOY decline. Notably, AES has beaten EPS estimates in two of the past four quarters, but that record has not yet translated into a more optimistic full-year outlook.

Wall Street's verdict is equally measured, with AES stock carrying an overall rating of “Hold.” All nine analysts covering it currently share the view, suggesting investors might want more convincing evidence of sustained growth and financial improvement.

There has been little movement in that assessment over the past three months, when all nine analysts also maintained a “Hold” rating.

As for where the stock could head next, Wall Street's average price target of $15.12 represents potential upside of 2%, while the Street-High target is $16, up 7.9% from current levels.
