Walmart International's Digital Mix Rises: Can Margins Move Higher?

Walmart Inc. WMT is seeing its International business become increasingly digital, with e-commerce representing a larger share of sales across markets. The shift is occurring alongside improving e-commerce economics, although the segment’s constant-currency operating margin remained under pressure in the second quarter of fiscal 2027.

International e-commerce sales increased 19% in the quarter, led by China, India and Canada. E-commerce accounted for about 30% of International net sales on a constant-currency basis, up roughly 300 basis points year over year. China stood out, with e-commerce sales rising 26% and digital mix reaching 55%, up 239 basis points from a year earlier. Across International, about 65% of e-commerce units were delivered the same or next day, with roughly half of those arriving in less than one hour.

The segment also showed progress on digital profitability. International operating income increased 16.6% to $1.4 billion, while constant-currency operating income rose 5.7% to $1.3 billion. The increase benefited from lower e-commerce losses and business mix changes across markets.

However, the constant-currency operating income rate declined 9 basis points to 3.9%, while the gross profit rate fell 15 basis points to 21.4%. Meanwhile, reported operating margin rose 13 basis points to 4.1%. The results show that a higher digital mix is being accompanied by better e-commerce margins and lower e-commerce losses. Still, those benefits were partly offset by a discrete trade receivable reserve, price investments, format mix and strategic investments in Mexico and Canada, leaving constant-currency segment margin below the year-ago level.

Walmart International’s rising digital mix is showing signs of better e-commerce economics, but sustained margin expansion will depend on whether those gains can increasingly offset ongoing investment and mix-related pressures.
