3M's Consumer Business Hurt by Weak Retail Markets: Is a Turnaround Likely?

3M Company MMM continues to face challenges in its Consumer business segment. The segment is experiencing sluggish demand across consumer retail markets, as cautious discretionary spending and reduced inventory levels at retailers weigh on performance. These headwinds were evident in the Consumer segment’s organic sales, which fell 2.1% in the second quarter of 2026 after declining 1.3% in the first quarter.

The packaging & expression and home improvement businesses have experienced notable softness. Amid this, the Federal Reserve recently hiked its interest rate by 25 basis points to address inflation. This hawkish stance is expected to push back the Consumer business segment’s recovery further. Spending on hardline consumer products is likely to stay subdued in the near term, which may weigh on the segment’s performance.

Nevertheless, 3M could benefit from sustained strength in its Safety and Industrial segment. Solid demand across abrasives, industrial adhesives and tapes, specialty products, roofing granules, personal safety, and electrical markets is expected to support the company’s growth in the coming quarters. Also, strength in 3M’s semiconductor, data center and aerospace markets holds promise.

Segmental Performance of MMM’s Peers in Q2

Among 3M’s major peers, Carlisle Companies Incorporated CSL is experiencing favorable trends in the Weatherproofing Technologies segment, supported by market-share gains and operational improvement initiatives. In the second quarter of 2026, segmental revenues increased 10% year over year, including 8% organic growth, as share gains more than offset softness in residential and non-residential construction markets.

Another peer, Honeywell Technologies HON, is benefiting from strength in the Industrial Automation segment. Favorable utilities project timing and solid momentum in the sensing and industrial measurement business bode well for the segment. The segment’s organic revenues increased 4% year over year in the second quarter.
