Buy, Hold, or Sell Tesla Stock After Q3 Earnings & SpaceX Merger Talks?

Tesla TSLA) shares came under selling pressure on Thursday despite the electric vehicle (EV) giant delivering better-than-expected Q3 results, as investors questioned whether its ambitious artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics initiatives can justify its premium valuation.

To that point, TSLA is trading at over 200X forward earnings and more than 14X forward sales.

While Tesla's profitability remains challenged, stronger vehicle deliveries, improving automotive margins, and the possibility of a merger with SpaceX SPCX) could provide meaningful catalysts for the stock.

Tesla's Q3 Earnings Beat Overshadowed by Profitability Concerns

Tesla reported adjusted Q3 earnings of $0.48 per share, exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.45 but declining from EPS of $0.50 in the year-ago quarter.

Quarterly revenue was slightly down from the prior year at $28.04 billion but edged estimates of $27.77 billion, with vehicle deliveries increasing to 486,532 units. Encouragingly, automotive gross margins excluding regulatory credits improved to approximately 18.1%.

That said, operating income plunged 56% year over year to $718 million as operating expenses surged 39%, highlighting continued profitability challenges as Tesla invests in autonomous driving, AI infrastructure, and its Optimus humanoid robots.

Notably, Tesla generated $1.53 billion in free cash flow, beating expectations despite declining from $3.99 billion in the prior-year quarter. Management also lowered its full-year capital expenditure outlook from more than $25 billion to $20 billion, although this created uncertainty about the pace of its ambitious AI and robotics expansion.

Looking ahead, Tesla did not provide specific Q4 revenue or earnings guidance but reiterated its growth ambitions, targeting 400 megawatts of AI training capacity by year-end while ramping production of its Optimus robots and expanding its autonomous Robotaxi operations.

Tesla's Earnings Estimates Were Trending Lower

Notably, Tesla's earnings estimate revisions were trending lower heading into its Q3 report, reflecting concerns about profitability and rising AI investments.

Over the last 60 days, the Zacks Consensus EPS estimate for fiscal year 2026 (F1) has declined 5% from $1.78 to $1.69 per share, as shown below. Estimates for FY27 (F2) have also slipped 5% from $2.36 to $2.24 per share.

These downward revisions highlight growing uncertainty surrounding Tesla's outlook as the company navigates profitability challenges in its core EV business while working to monetize its investments in autonomous driving, AI, and robotics.

Could a SpaceX Merger Revive Tesla's AI Prospects?

A potential merger with SpaceX could provide a significant catalyst for Tesla as investors grow increasingly skeptical about its ability to monetize AI investments.

Elon Musk recently confirmed that both companies have formed independent committees to explore a merger, potentially combining Tesla's autonomous driving and robotics technology with SpaceX's satellite communications, AI infrastructure, and growing Starlink business.

Such a combination could strengthen Tesla's long-term growth prospects and provide additional revenue streams beyond electric vehicles. However, a merger remains uncertain and would face substantial shareholder, regulatory, and integration hurdles.

Bottom Line: Is Tesla Stock a Buy After Q3 Earnings?

Tesla stock currently lands a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell), reflecting concerns about its profitability and earnings outlook as the company transitions toward AI, autonomous vehicles, and robotics.

While Tesla's Q3 earnings beat and improving automotive margins are encouraging, its elevated valuation and uncertainty surrounding future AI investments suggest investors should remain cautious.

Nevertheless, the possibility of a SpaceX merger could become a significant catalyst for TSLA stock, potentially creating a more compelling long-term buying opportunity if the companies can demonstrate meaningful synergies and sustainable earnings growth.
