GD Q3 Earnings Call Highlights Raised Outlook and Record Backlog

General Dynamics Corporation GD raised its 2026 earnings outlook following strong third-quarter execution, highlighting sustained demand across defense and aerospace operations, improving shipyard productivity and robust order activity.

During the earnings call, management emphasized record backlog, Gulfstream's production expansion plans and continued investment in submarine manufacturing capacity. Executives also addressed margin sustainability, capital spending and the company's leadership transition.

GD Raises 2026 Earnings and Revenue Guidance

Chairperson and chief executive officer (CEO) Phebe Novakovic raised the full-year earnings per share guidance to $17.2-$17.3 from $16.8-$16.9, marking the company's third upward revision this year.

Management now expects 2026 revenues of $56.5-$56.8 billion, with operating margins around 10.5%. The updated outlook follows third-quarter earnings of $4.49 per share, exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4.14, while revenues of $14.57 billion surpassed the $13.69 billion consensus estimate.

Novakovic said the company would provide its 2027 outlook in January following completion of its annual planning process.

General Dynamics' Marine Backlog Supports Expansion

Chief financial officer Kimberly Kuryea highlighted nearly $99 billion in quarterly orders, lifting consolidated backlog to a record $220.3 billion. Marine Systems accounted for $146.9 billion, supported by major submarine awards.

Electric Boat secured $29.5 billion for five additional Columbia-class submarines and $42.1 billion for nine Virginia-class submarines.

During the Q&A, a JPMorgan analyst questioned the sustainability of Marine margins. President Danny Deep explained that a one-time favorable cumulative adjustment contributed to the quarter's 7.9% margin. Excluding that benefit, management identified the mid-7% range as a baseline, with further improvement opportunities tied to productivity.

GD Targets Higher Gulfstream Aircraft Deliveries

Deep outlined Gulfstream's objective of delivering 200 aircraft annually by 2030, supported by existing manufacturing capacity, workforce and facilities. Achieving higher volumes will require suppliers to keep pace.

Aerospace generated $3.54 billion in quarterly revenues, up 9.3%, while operating margins expanded 120 basis points to 14.5%. Management attributed the improvement partly to manufacturing efficiencies and a favorable aircraft mix.

Responding to a TD Cowen analyst, Deep acknowledged a delivery gap between the outgoing G280 and incoming G300 during 2027. However, additional large-cabin deliveries are expected to offset lower G280 volumes and support a more favorable margin mix.

General Dynamics Maintains Elevated Capital Spending

Kuryea reported $1.7 billion in quarterly operating cash flow and $1.2 billion in free cash flow, despite significant capital expenditures and a voluntary pension contribution.

Management expects full-year capital spending between 3.5% and 4% of revenues, with substantial fourth-quarter investment concentrated on expanding shipyard capacity.

During the Q&A, an RBC Capital Markets analyst sought clarity on future spending. Kuryea indicated that capital expenditures could remain elevated in 2027, while Deep emphasized continued investment in automation, manufacturing facilities and workforce development.

GD Sees Broad Defense Demand With Margin Pressures

Combat Systems revenues increased 6% to $2.39 billion, although operating margins contracted 110 basis points to 13.8%. Novakovic attributed the pressure primarily to Land Systems' transition toward development programs.

Deep highlighted 28% revenue growth at European Land Systems and expanding demand for munitions. He also identified 2028 production milestones for solid rocket motors and artillery programs.

Technologies revenues grew 10.8% to $3.68 billion, supported by GDIT. However, operating margins declined 40 basis points to 9.4% due to business mix. Deep expects sustained mid-single-digit growth, supported by differentiated Mission Systems products and continued GDIT contract activity.

General Dynamics Emphasizes Execution and Continuity

Management's overarching message centered on converting record demand into sustained production growth while maintaining operational discipline. Shipyard productivity, aircraft deliveries and capital investment remain central priorities.

Novakovic also confirmed that this was her final earnings call as CEO. She will remain executive chair, while Deep assumes leadership, maintaining the company's emphasis on disciplined capital allocation and investment within established businesses.
