Revenue, margins, and operating performance
- Product revenue was $243.4 million, down 1.1%; services revenue was $9.0 million, up 11.7%. Systems revenue was $195.4 million versus $195.2 million; aftermarket revenue declined to $56.9 million from $58.8 million.
- Product gross margin improved to 47.5% from 42.0%, primarily due to favorable systems mix. Services gross margin fell to 6.1% from 9.8%, reflecting service-contract mix.
- Operating expenses increased $6.9 million, with higher R&D, sales and marketing, and G&A costs. Management attributed the increases primarily to headcount and personnel costs.
- Other income was $2.5 million versus $1.5 million. Higher interest income was partly offset by increased foreign-exchange losses; forward currency contracts generated $1.5 million of gains. The company reported a $6.6 million currency loss on foreign-denominated transactions in its cash flow reconciliation.
- Income tax expense rose to $7.4 million from $5.2 million. The Q1 2024 effective tax rate was below the 21% U.S. statutory rate, supported by deductions, R&D credits, and an equity-compensation tax item.
Liquidity, cash flow, and obligations
- At March 31, 2024, cash and cash equivalents were $134.0 million, short-term investments $396.2 million, and restricted cash $6.7 million. Together, cash, cash equivalents, and restricted cash were $140.6 million, down from $174.0 million at year-end; short-term investments increased from $338.9 million.
- Operating cash flow was $42.2 million. Investing cash outflow was $55.7 million, mainly reflecting net purchases of short-term investments; capital expenditures were $1.6 million. Financing cash outflow was $18.1 million, including $15.0 million of share repurchases.
- Total assets were $1.307 billion and total liabilities $404.9 million. The filing reports no conventional debt balance; finance lease obligations totaled $44.8 million, primarily related to the headquarters sale-leaseback. Total lease liabilities, including operating leases, were $74.4 million.
- Management said existing cash and cash equivalents should be sufficient for anticipated short- and long-term cash requirements. It noted cash needs to support business growth, repurchases, and potential organic or inorganic growth opportunities.
Business outlook, risks, and notable items
- Management described demand for capital equipment as strong. Mature-process technology represented 99% of shipped systems revenue; power devices were 55% of systems revenue, general mature applications 41%, image sensors 3%, and DRAM 1%.
- Management expects general mature-process markets may improve in the second half of 2024 and forecasts a strong year in 2025 for DRAM and “Not AND” memory segments. These are expectations, not guidance with quantified revenue or earnings targets.
- The ten largest customers accounted for 54.8% of Q1 revenue, although no single customer exceeded 10%. Semiconductor customer capital spending, fab utilization, geographic conditions, and customer concentration can affect results.
- The company repurchased 122,000 shares at an average $122.99 per share for $15.0 million. Approximately $175.0 million remained available under the repurchase program at March 31.
- Axcelis reported no litigation it believes could materially adversely affect operations and no material changes to the risk factors in its 2023 Form 10-K. It also reported no material change in internal control over financial reporting and concluded disclosure controls were effective.
- New in Q1, the company entered into non-speculative, month-to-month foreign-exchange forward contracts with $100 million notional value at quarter-end; these are not designated as accounting hedges. It recorded an approximately $18,000 unrealized gain at March 31.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether the forecast improvement in mature-process markets in H2 2024 and strength in memory markets in 2025 materialize, and how customer capital spending evolves.
- Whether the gross-margin improvement is sustainable given its stated reliance on favorable systems mix, and whether service margins recover.
- How customer concentration, inventory levels ($312.2 million), and deferred revenue ($208.4 million) develop relative to demand and shipments.
- The impact of foreign-exchange movements and forward contracts, including the relationship between reported currency losses and contract gains.
- Cash deployment among repurchases, business investment, and potential acquisitions, and the company’s lease-related obligations.
- Realization of deferred tax assets; the company carries a $10.8 million U.S. valuation allowance against certain tax credits and state net operating losses.
