Product revenue increased 22.7% to $67.5 million, primarily on higher Purion system sales. New-system revenue was $42.5 million versus $32.5 million. Services revenue was nearly flat at $5.8 million. Product gross margin fell to 33.1% from 38.6%, reflecting higher sales of lower-margin new Purion systems and a lower mix of parts and upgrades. Services gross margin improved to 18.0% from 9.0%. Operating expenses declined, mainly because of lower personnel costs and reduced headcount. Net income includes $0.9 million of lease-related interest expense and $0.3 million of term-loan prepayment charges.

Liquidity, debt and balance sheet

Cash and cash equivalents were $74.5 million at March 31, 2015, up from $30.8 million at year-end. Operating activities provided $8.7 million; investing activities used $0.3 million; financing activities provided $34.9 million. Operating cash benefited from increased payables, other current liabilities and deferred revenue, partly offset by inventory and prepaid-asset growth.

Current assets were $234.4 million and current liabilities $50.4 million. The $14.5 million term loan was repaid in February, with related interest and a prepayment penalty; no term-loan balance remained at quarter-end. The headquarters sale-leaseback was accounted for as a financing arrangement, leaving a $47.6 million long-term obligation. The 22-year lease has stated total payments of $134.3 million, including $86.7 million of interest; the implicit rate is 10.65%. The revolving facility had $3.1 million available, with $6.9 million of letters of credit outstanding; Axcelis reported covenant compliance.

Material changes, outlook and risks

  • Revenue growth and operating profitability improved year over year, driven by Purion system sales and lower operating expenses; overall gross margin declined.
  • Management reported market-share progress, new Purion customer wins and follow-on orders, with growth in memory and non-leading-edge foundry and logic. It expects Purion sales to continue growing during 2015 and intends to maintain tight cost control. No numerical revenue or earnings guidance was provided.
  • Management said existing cash, cash equivalents and borrowing capacity should meet anticipated short- and long-term requirements, while noting this depends on forecasts and may be affected by demand, customer acceptance, pricing, costs and global conditions.
  • The semiconductor equipment market is cyclical. One customer represented 36.5% of Q1 revenue; the ten largest represented 80.8%. Four customers accounted for 58.5% of gross receivables at quarter-end.
  • Axcelis cited no litigation it believes would materially harm operations and reported no material changes to its previously disclosed risk factors. It maintains a full valuation allowance against U.S. deferred tax assets; Q1 tax expense primarily related to foreign operations.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether Purion sales growth can continue and customer concentration remains manageable.
  • Whether product margins recover as system and aftermarket revenue mix changes.
  • The cash-flow quality and sustainability of working-capital contributions, particularly higher payables and deferred revenue.
  • The economic and liquidity implications of the 22-year sale-leaseback, including its financing treatment and long-term payment burden.
  • Available revolver capacity and covenant compliance as the facility approaches its October 31, 2015 term end.
