Ambarella, Inc. — Q1 FY2023 Form 10-Q
Reporting period: Three months ended April 30, 2022. The financial statements are unaudited. Ambarella develops low-power semiconductor system-on-chip solutions for video, image processing and computer vision applications.
Financial performance
| Metric | Q1 FY2023 | Prior-year quarter |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $90.3 million | $70.1 million |
| Gross profit / margin | $56.5 million / 62.6% | $43.8 million / 62.4% |
| Operating expenses | $67.0 million | $53.9 million |
| Operating loss | $10.5 million | $10.1 million |
| Net loss | $10.8 million; $0.29 per diluted share | $10.8 million; $0.30 per diluted share |
| Operating cash flow | $33.6 million | $(4.5) million |
Revenue rose 28.8% year over year, driven mainly by professional IP security and automotive OEM sensing and fleet markets. Growth in computer-vision solutions continued. Lower demand in China weighed on home IP security, automotive aftermarket and consumer markets. Gross margin improved slightly, reflecting a richer mix of computer-vision and automotive sales and a regional customer-mix shift, partly offset by higher inventory reserves.
Research and development expense increased 23.3% to $46.7 million; selling, general and administrative expense increased 27.0% to $20.4 million. Higher personnel, stock-based compensation and engineering costs were key contributors. Net loss was essentially unchanged from the prior-year quarter.
Liquidity, cash flow and obligations
Cash and cash equivalents were $200.6 million at April 30, 2022, up from $171.0 million at January 31, 2022. The company reported no debt-security investments after liquidating them in fiscal 2022 to help fund its Oculii acquisition. The filing does not report borrowings; operating lease liabilities totaled $10.7 million.
Operating cash flow was $33.6 million, compared with an outflow in the prior-year quarter. Management attributed the improvement mainly to collections of accounts receivable and lower inventory purchases, with timing of employee and supplier payments partly offsetting it. This working-capital-driven increase occurred despite the quarterly net loss. Investing cash outflow was $4.0 million; financing cash flow was approximately neutral. Management believes existing cash is sufficient for anticipated requirements through at least the next 12 months.
Manufacturing purchase commitments were approximately $66.3 million, generally subject to cancellation or adjustment by agreement with manufacturers. Current liabilities were $74.9 million and total liabilities were $94.3 million.
Changes, outlook and risks
- Revenue growth was accompanied by higher operating expenses, leaving operating loss slightly wider. Gross margin increased 0.2 percentage points year over year.
- Management expects research and development and selling, general and administrative expenses to increase in absolute dollars as it invests in computer vision, automotive, robotics and other markets. No specific revenue or earnings guidance is provided in the filing text.
- COVID-19 restrictions in China disrupted orders and Asia supply-chain logistics; lockdowns also reduced demand in certain consumer-related markets. Longer manufacturing times and component shortages could constrain shipments and customer demand.
- Revenue remains concentrated: WT Microelectronics represented about 57% of quarterly revenue, Chicony 11% and Hakuto 10%. The company relies on third-party manufacturers, generally without long-term supply agreements, and a substantial portion of production and logistics is in Asia.
- On May 27, 2022, the board extended the share repurchase program through June 30, 2023; approximately $49 million remained available. No shares were repurchased during the quarter.
- Stock-based compensation was $27.0 million, including approximately $1.7 million of additional expense associated with accelerated vesting following the former CFO’s departure. Unrecognized compensation cost for unvested awards was substantial.
- The IRS was examining the company’s U.S. federal tax return for fiscal 2017. Gross unrecognized tax benefits were approximately $31.1 million; management did not anticipate significant changes to uncertain tax positions in the next 12 months. The company reported no material legal proceedings and said disclosure controls were effective.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether revenue growth in computer vision, professional IP security and automotive markets continues, and whether design wins translate into sustained production sales.
- How China-related demand disruptions, manufacturing capacity constraints and component availability affect shipments, customer orders, inventory and gross margin.
- Whether customer and distributor concentration—especially WT—and reliance on Asian manufacturing and logistics remain manageable.
- Whether operating cash flow remains robust after the favorable receivables and inventory movements, while assessing the $66.3 million manufacturing commitments.
- How ongoing stock-based compensation, Oculii integration and related amortization affect expenses and per-share results; and whether tax examinations or uncertain tax positions produce material changes.
