Sales increased 33.1%, with growth across Logic, Memory, EUV, DUV and installed-base services. ASML recognized revenue on 42 EUV systems versus 31 in 2020. Management attributed stronger margins to improved EUV profitability, product mix and installed-base upgrades. The effective tax rate rose to 15.2% from 13.7%, mainly following a higher Dutch innovation-box rate.
Liquidity, debt and capital returns
Year-end cash and cash equivalents were €6.952 billion and short-term investments €0.639 billion, totaling €7.590 billion. Debt carrying value was €4.584 billion, including €0.509 billion current and €4.075 billion non-current; cash and short-term investments exceeded debt by about €3.0 billion. The company had an undrawn €700 million committed credit facility and reported sufficient working capital for present requirements. 2021 capital expenditure on property, plant and equipment was €0.901 billion.
ASML repurchased €8.560 billion of shares and paid €1.368 billion in dividends during 2021. The proposed total 2021 dividend was €5.50 per share, including €1.80 interim and a proposed €3.70 final payment. A buyback program of up to €9 billion runs through December 2023.
Material changes versus 2020
- Net sales rose 33.1%; net income increased 65.6% and gross margin expanded 4.1 percentage points.
- Operating cash flow increased by €6.218 billion, supported by higher earnings and customer down payments. Free cash flow rose to €9.906 billion.
- Net contract liabilities increased to €11.161 billion from €5.594 billion, principally reflecting down payments for systems to be delivered later.
- Year-end inventory increased to €5.179 billion from €4.569 billion; accounts receivable rose to €3.028 billion from €1.310 billion.
- Share repurchases increased substantially; the company’s ordinary shares outstanding declined to 402.6 million from 416.5 million.
Outlook, risks and unusual items
Management expected 2022 net sales to grow about 20% year over year. It forecast Logic system revenue growth above 20%, Memory system revenue growth around 25%, EUV system revenue growth around 25%, non-EUV shipment revenue growth above 20%, and installed-base management growth around 10%. It expected to ship about 55 EUV systems, with revenue on six deferred to 2023 because of fast shipments. Q1 2022 guidance was revenue of €3.3–€3.5 billion, gross margin around 49%, R&D costs around €760 million, SG&A around €210 million, and an annualized effective tax rate of 15–16%.
Longer-term scenarios put 2025 annual sales at approximately €24–€30 billion with a 54–56% gross margin. These are forward-looking estimates, not guarantees. Key risks include constrained supply and reliance on specialized, sometimes single-source suppliers—especially Carl Zeiss SMT for critical optics—semiconductor cyclicality, customer concentration, export restrictions and geopolitical tensions, cybersecurity and IP threats, talent constraints, and the execution and adoption of complex new technologies. Two customers represented 67.2% of 2021 sales; Taiwan and South Korea accounted for €7.328 billion and €6.223 billion, respectively.
Supply shortages and start-up issues at a new logistics center delayed some shipments. Fast shipments before completion of normal factory acceptance testing shifted revenue recognition until customer acceptance in the field. A €213.7 million pre-tax gain from divestitures of non-core Berliner Glas businesses was recorded as other income. Separately, a January 2, 2022 fire affected part of an ASML Berlin production building; management said it expected no significant system-output impact, while the financial assessment remained underway. No material probable or reasonably probable contingency was identified at year-end.
Important facts investors should verify
- Track actual 2022 shipments, customer acceptance timing and revenue deferred from fast shipments against management’s outlook.
- Assess whether supplier capacity, particularly at Carl Zeiss SMT and other critical vendors, can support demand without further delays or cost pressure.
- Review customer concentration, receivables and down-payment-driven contract liabilities, including the timing and collectability of balances.
- Confirm delivery of the proposed final dividend and execution of the remaining 2021–2023 buyback authorization.
- Monitor the Berlin fire’s eventual financial and operational impact, and progress on EUV High-NA development and customer adoption.
