Average funding costs increased to 2.27% from 1.45%, while the yield on average interest-earning assets increased to 4.44% from 3.92%. The resulting margin compression was the principal operating earnings pressure.

The company declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.42 per share, unchanged from Q1 2023. Book value per share was $34.37 and tangible book value per share was $27.82 at March 31, 2024.

Material Changes Versus Prior Comparable Period

  • Reported net income and EPS increased because Q1 2024 included a $910,000 recovery from the sale of a Signature Bank corporate bond that had been written off in Q1 2023. Excluding this item, adjusted net income and adjusted EPS declined 11% year over year.
  • Net interest income declined $3.0 million as funding costs grew faster than earning-asset yields. Average deposit cost increased to 1.97% from 1.22%, and average borrowing cost increased to 3.96% from 3.13%.
  • Non-interest income increased $456,000, led by higher service charges, fiduciary services, brokerage and insurance commissions, mortgage banking income and bank-owned life insurance income. Debit card income and other income declined.
  • Non-interest expense increased $1.2 million, primarily because of higher salaries and employee benefits and increased technology, data-processing and information-security spending.
  • Total loans increased $22.9 million from year-end, driven principally by a $31.9 million increase in non-owner-occupied commercial real estate loans. Deposits decreased $45.8 million, while brokered deposits increased $52.0 million to $153.9 million.
  • Total borrowings increased $115.9 million to approximately $645.8 million, including $225.0 million of Bank Term Funding Program borrowings, $175.0 million of FHLBB advances and $201.5 million of customer repurchase agreements.
  • The allowance for credit losses on loans decreased to $35.6 million, or 0.86% of loans, from $36.9 million, or 0.90%, at year-end. The company recorded a $1.2 million credit for loan losses, primarily reflecting stronger asset quality and a more favorable macroeconomic forecast.
  • Other comprehensive loss was $1.5 million, compared with other comprehensive income of $6.5 million in Q1 2023, primarily due to changes in debt-security fair values.

Guidance, Outlook, Commentary, Risks and Unusual Items

The filing does not provide formal quantitative earnings guidance. Management stated that the inverted yield curve and continued deposit and wholesale funding-cost pressure are compressing net interest margin. Management expects future performance to remain sensitive to interest rates, deposit pricing, funding mix, loan growth and the timing of asset repricing.

Management described asset quality as a strength and reported no significant signs of distress in the commercial real estate portfolio. Non-performing assets were $7.6 million, or 0.13% of total assets. Loans 30–89 days past due were 0.05% of total loans, and annualized net charge-offs were 0.02% of average loans. However, the portfolio has meaningful commercial real estate exposure: non-residential and residential building-related industries represented 13% and 11% of total loans, respectively.

Liquidity remained substantial. Available primary liquidity was approximately $1.4 billion, or 2.1 times uninsured and uncollateralized deposits. Uninsured and uncollateralized deposits were $674.4 million, or 15% of total deposits. The company noted that cash balances declined to historical normal levels after quarter-end and that access to wholesale funding, brokered deposits and repurchase markets could be affected by market conditions.

At March 31, 2024, the company and bank exceeded regulatory capital requirements, and the bank remained well capitalized. The company’s total risk-based capital ratio was 14.52%, while the bank’s was 13.85%.

Material risks identified include economic weakness in Maine and New England, commercial real estate vacancies and credit deterioration, interest-rate and funding volatility, deposit outflows, securities-market losses, financial-services industry turmoil, cybersecurity and technology risks, regulatory changes, litigation, geopolitical events and climate-related effects. The company reported no material legal loss contingencies and no material goodwill impairment indicators.

The company’s board authorized repurchases of up to 750,000 shares through January 5, 2025, but no shares were repurchased during the quarter. ASU 2023-09, which will enhance income-tax disclosures, is effective for annual periods beginning after December 15, 2024; management does not expect a material impact on the consolidated financial statements.
