Changes, outlook and risks
Growth in payment-processing fees, attributed mainly to new customers, was offset by lower interest income and the absence of the prior-year securities gain. Tax-equivalent net interest income fell 8.5% to $10.413 million: average earning assets increased 6.0%, but their yield declined to 3.62% from 4.20%. Management cited a low-rate environment, repricing or maturity of higher-yielding assets, and competition contributing to lower average loans. Operating costs rose 3.1%, including higher occupancy and legal expenses; lower pension costs helped hold salaries and benefits slightly below the prior-year quarter.
Management expects cash, maturing investments, and operating cash flow to be sufficient for operations and capital expenditures in 2014; estimated capital expenditures are less than $5 million. The filing provides no earnings or revenue guidance. Management identified interest rates, business activity, energy costs, and new-business opportunities as factors that could affect results and liquidity. The company’s interest-rate policy limits the change in annualized net interest income to 15% under an immediate, sustained 200-basis-point parallel rate change; management said its risk position had not changed materially from year-end.
Other disclosures: securities produced a $3.688 million pretax unrealized gain in other comprehensive income during the quarter; management considered unrealized losses temporary and said it was not more likely than not the company would have to sell affected securities before recovery. Pension expense declined, and the company made no defined-benefit plan contribution in Q1 while evaluating possible 2014 contributions. Unrecognized tax benefits were approximately $1.277 million. Ordinary-course legal proceedings were not expected by management to have a material effect; no material changes to the previously disclosed risk factors were reported. Basel III capital rules were scheduled to take effect beginning January 1, 2015, subject to phase-in.
