Gross margin declined amid lower-volume cost inefficiencies, less favorable product mix, and currency effects, partly offset by lower inventory costs. Operating expenses rose due mainly to headcount, merit increases, and the Emerging Customer sales initiative. Higher investment income ($3.6 million versus $1.5 million) partly supported pretax results. The effective tax rate was 2%, versus 23%; management attributes the difference to discrete tax benefits, and reports a 16% rate in both periods excluding discrete items.
Liquidity, cash flow, and capital
At April 2, 2023, cash and cash equivalents were $164.2 million and investments totaled $679.7 million, for combined cash and investments of $843.9 million. The company reported no long-term debt and said existing liquidity and operating cash flow should be sufficient for operating, investing, and financing needs over the next 12 months. Current assets were $722.2 million and current liabilities $214.0 million. Cash and investments were down $10.3 million from December 31, 2022.
Investing cash flow was a $5.8 million use, including $5.5 million of capital expenditures. Financing cash flow was a $39.3 million use, including $24.2 million of share repurchases and $12.1 million of dividends. The quarterly dividend was $0.07 per share. The remaining authorization under the March 2022 repurchase program was $388.5 million.
Material changes and management commentary
- Management cited weaker logistics sales, especially a continued investment pause by several large e-commerce customers; slower factory-automation spending; and unfavorable currency effects. Q1 2022 also benefited from backlog shipments delayed from the prior quarter.
- Revenue fell across all reported regions: Americas 36%, Greater China 31%, Other Asia 38%, and Europe 5% (Europe was flat at constant currency). Application-specific customer solutions revenue fell from $24.5 million to $10.3 million.
- Revenue declines in consumer electronics, automotive, semiconductor, and medical-related markets contributed to the broader factory-automation slowdown. In Europe, automotive growth partly offset weaker logistics revenue.
- Management continued investment in research and development and the Emerging Customer sales initiative, which is intended to expand machine-vision adoption among newer factory-automation customers. No quantified full-year revenue or earnings guidance is provided in the filing.
Risks, contingencies, and unusual items
- Contract manufacturer fire: A June 2022 fire destroyed Cognex-owned inventory and designated components. The company recorded $48.3 million of gross losses in 2022 and received $27.6 million of insurance proceeds in Q4 2022. After quarter-end, it received a further $2.5 million for a business-interruption claim, to be recognized in Q2 2023. Additional recoveries from the manufacturer are uncertain and not estimable.
- Commitments: Outstanding inventory purchase orders totaled $47.5 million, primarily relating to expected sales within 12 months; some may be canceled subject to penalties. Operating lease payments totaled $44.4 million, including $7.3 million for the remainder of 2023.
- Investment marks: The portfolio had a net unrealized loss of $19.5 million, per management’s liquidity discussion. Management said it intends and is able to hold securities to recovery at maturity, but could sell at a loss if liquidity needs required it. No credit-loss allowance was recorded.
- Other exposures: The company uses short-term foreign-currency forward contracts; it cites risks including supplier dependence, demand uncertainty, supply disruptions, competition, cybersecurity, international operations, taxes, and economic conditions. Routine legal matters are not expected by management to materially affect results or liquidity. Tax years remain open to examination, and Massachusetts was auditing 2020 and 2021.
Important facts for investors to verify

- Whether revenue and operating margins recover, given higher operating expenses and the absence of quantified company guidance in this filing.
- Timing and amount of any further insurance or contract-manufacturer recoveries related to the fire; the $2.5 million subsequent receipt is expected in Q2 2023.
- Liquidity and investment portfolio developments, including unrealized losses, alongside inventory purchase commitments and planned repurchases.
- How the discrete tax benefits affect reported earnings compared with the company’s stated 16% effective rate excluding discrete items.
