Q3 revenue was flat year over year; nine-month revenue grew 2%. Q3 product revenue fell 2%, while service revenue rose 29%. For the first nine months, product revenue increased 1% and service revenue increased 15%. Service revenue included $1.3m from a custom software arrangement whose work had been performed over the prior two years; recognition followed completion of the final obligation in Q3.
Factory automation sales increased 4% in Q3 and 6% year to date; excluding foreign-exchange effects, they rose 9% in both periods. Semiconductor and electronics capital equipment sales declined 23% in Q3 and 29% year to date. Surface inspection revenue was flat in Q3 and up 13% year to date. Q3 segment revenue mix was approximately 77% factory automation, 8% semiconductor/electronics equipment, and 15% surface inspection.
Q3 operating income and net income were slightly lower year over year. Management attributed lower gross-margin contribution mainly to higher new-product introduction costs. MVSD gross margin was 79% for Q3 versus 80% a year earlier; SISD gross margin improved to 54% from 53%. Service gross margin improved to 52% from 45%, partly reflecting the software arrangement.

Management outlook, risks, and unusual items
- No quantified revenue or earnings guidance is provided. Management expects continued significant R&D investment, targeting 10%–15% of revenue, and stated liquidity should be sufficient for the next 12 months.
- Management cited limited visibility and cyclicality in semiconductor and electronics equipment orders, as well as foreign-exchange exposure. Euro-related forward-contract settlements generated a $0.5m Q3 currency loss; total foreign-currency losses were $0.4m for Q3 and $1.1m year to date.
- The company changed the domicile and functional currency of the subsidiary holding international intellectual property and its Euro-denominated investment portfolio. The portfolio was converted primarily to U.S.-dollar investments. Foreign-currency translation adjustments reduced comprehensive income by $2.9m in Q3 and $12.1m year to date.
- The Q3 effective tax rate was 19%, including a $0.4m tax benefit from expired statutes of limitations, partly offset by a prior-year tax accrual true-up. The company said tax-reserve releases of approximately $1.5m–$1.8m could reduce tax expense over the next 12 months.
- A patent-infringement dispute remains pending on appeal after an adverse ITC determination; the company says an adverse outcome could materially affect financial position, liquidity, results, or indemnification obligations. Other routine legal matters were not expected to be material.
- Other disclosed risks include global economic conditions, customer concentration, competition, product transitions and quality, suppliers, intellectual-property protection, tax exposures, and potential investment or goodwill impairments. No impairment charges were recorded in the first nine months.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether factory-automation growth can continue to offset the steep decline and cyclicality in semiconductor/electronics equipment demand.
- How much reported service-revenue growth and margin improvement reflects the one-time $1.3m software arrangement.
- The sustainability of margins given new-product introduction costs, and the impact of planned R&D and strategic headcount investment.
- Investment portfolio composition, liquidity, and exposure to interest-rate, credit, and foreign-exchange movements.
- Developments in the patent appeal and tax uncertainties, including potential reserve releases and the stated $1.5m–$1.8m possible tax benefit.
