Q3 revenue increased 12%; service and other revenue rose 66% while product revenue declined 23%. For the first nine months, revenue grew 11%, driven by biologics and drug-delivery revenue, up 40% to $9.5 million. Product revenue fell 24%. Gross margin declined primarily because newer pre-clinical services had lower margins and the manufacturing-facility transition added costs.

Operating expenses for the first nine months increased: R&D to $9.1 million (+14%), sales and marketing to $9.2 million (+35%), and general and administrative to $9.0 million (+25%). Management cited increased personnel and share-based compensation, and a higher credit-loss allowance; G&A also reflected added occupancy costs.

Cash, liquidity, and debt

  • At September 30, cash and cash equivalents were $24.3 million; short-term investments were nil, compared with $9.9 million at December 31, 2022. Current assets were $37.3 million and current liabilities were $5.6 million.
  • Operating cash use was $12.6 million for the first nine months, versus $13.1 million in 2022. Cash declined $3.3 million from year-end, to $24.3 million.
  • The company reported a $167.8 million accumulated deficit. Management stated that forecast cash and cash equivalents were sufficient to fund operations and obligations for at least the next 12 months.
  • A $10 million principal balance remains on the secured convertible note, due January 2025, convertible at the holder’s option at $6.00 per share. The note’s rate was 7.25% at quarter-end and is tied to SOFR; it is secured by company assets.

Material developments, outlook, and risks

  • ClearPoint began operating its new Carlsbad manufacturing facility in June 2023; it recorded about $2.5 million in related right-of-use assets and lease liabilities. The prior Irvine facility lease was terminated effective October 2023, without material financial-statement impact.
  • Management provided no specific revenue or earnings guidance. It expects R&D and selling, marketing, and administrative costs to remain significant as it develops products and expands commercialization. Biologics and drug-delivery growth depends on customers’ research programs, clinical-trial progress, and eventual regulatory and commercial success.
  • Credit-loss allowance rose to $1.0 million from $0.1 million at year-end. Two customers represented 29% and 24% of accounts receivable at quarter-end. A related-party pharmaceutical customer accounted for 12% of sales in both the quarter and nine-month period; it is also a noteholder, significant customer, and has a representative on the board.
  • The company disclosed $1.5 million in bank balances above FDIC-insured limits and added a risk factor concerning potential losses if a financial institution fails. Other cited risks include inflation, supply-chain and labor constraints, customer concentration, dependence on partners, and continued operating losses. Management reported no known legal proceedings expected to have a material adverse effect.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether biologics and drug-delivery service growth can continue and convert into recurring, profitable business.
  • Whether margins improve as new services scale and the Carlsbad facility transition-related costs subside.
  • Cash-burn trajectory and funding needs beyond management’s stated 12-month liquidity assessment.
  • Repayment, refinancing, or potential conversion of the $10 million secured note before its January 2025 maturity, including variable-rate interest costs.
  • Collectability of receivables, customer and related-party concentration, and uninsured cash exposure.
