Material changes versus the prior period

  • Revenue decreased 1%, while expenses increased 4% to $2.327 billion. Operating income fell 8%, and operating margin contracted 270 basis points.
  • Higher labor and fringe costs (+$75 million), including inflation and headcount-related costs, and a $46 million prior-year insurance recovery contributed to expense growth. Fuel expense declined $39 million, primarily due to lower locomotive fuel prices.
  • Operating cash flow declined $167 million. Q1 2024 included $387 million of federal tax payments postponed from 2023; the prior-year period included $232 million of retroactive labor-related payments.
  • Share repurchases were $247 million versus $1.067 billion a year earlier. The quarterly dividend was increased 9% to $0.12 per share, effective March 2024.
  • Service measures weakened: carload trip plan performance was 82% versus 86%; on-time originations were 75% versus 84%; and on-time arrivals were 70% versus 77%. Personal injury frequency increased 17%, while the train accident rate improved 5%.

Outlook, commentary, risks and contingencies

Management expects 2024 capital investments of approximately $2.5 billion, prioritizing safety, reliability, infrastructure and profitable growth. The company expects to fund capital spending primarily through operating cash flow. The filing does not provide a clear earnings or revenue forecast.

Management said it continues to pursue operational improvements and safe, reliable service. CSX reported $1.5 billion of cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments at quarter-end, no borrowings under its $1.2 billion revolving credit facility or $1.0 billion commercial paper program, and compliance with credit-facility covenants.

All 12 rail unions participating in national bargaining are covered by agreements that remain in effect through December 31, 2024; formal notices to amend may be served as early as November 1, 2024. Key risks include economic and freight-demand changes, competition, fuel prices, severe weather and other disruptions, labor costs and negotiations, safety and cybersecurity, insurance availability, and litigation and environmental obligations.

Environmental remediation reserves were $154 million. CSX is involved in proceedings concerning approximately 230 potentially impaired sites, including Lower Passaic River matters; management said the currently estimated share of remediation costs for that matter is not expected to be material. For certain legal matters with reasonably possible losses above recorded reserves, the estimated aggregate range was $3 million to $54 million. The filing warns that actual outcomes may differ and could be material in a particular period. No unusual items were identified for either period under management’s Economic Profit measure.
