Revenue mix: subscription $97.3 million (+11%); perpetual licenses $13.2 million (-26%); customer support $76.9 million (-5%); and other services $10.8 million (-4%). Subscription was 49% of revenue, versus 44% a year earlier. Management reported SaaS revenue doubled year over year; term-based license revenue declined 4%.
Cash and cash equivalents were $274.6 million at June 30, 2023, down from $287.8 million at March 31, 2023. Working capital was $122.7 million, down from $140.8 million. Investing cash outflow was $1.5 million and financing cash outflow was $49.8 million, primarily reflecting $51.0 million of share repurchases. The company had no borrowings under its $100 million revolving credit facility and reported compliance with its covenants. Current and long-term deferred revenue totaled $474.8 million. Remaining performance obligations, including deferred revenue, were $536.7 million; approximately 64% is expected to be recognized within 12 months.
Material changes versus the prior comparable period
Revenue was essentially flat as subscription growth was offset by lower perpetual-license and customer-support revenue. Gross margin declined about one percentage point, including weaker margin on other services (28% versus 37%) and customer support (81% versus 82%). Operating expenses fell $12.7 million: research and development declined $8.7 million, depreciation and amortization fell $1.0 million, and the prior-year quarter included $2.1 million of restructuring expense. Income taxes increased to $6.9 million from $3.7 million, mainly due to higher pretax income.
Operating cash flow improved, while cash declined due largely to repurchases. The company repurchased approximately 779,000 shares for $51.0 million at an average $65.54 per share. The board increased the repurchase authorization to $250 million; $204.9 million remained available at quarter end.
Outlook, commentary, risks, and unusual items
Management expects existing cash, cash equivalents, and operating cash flows to meet anticipated needs for at least the next 12 months. No specific revenue or earnings guidance was provided. Management said continued responsible investment in research and development remains a priority and expects subscription arrangements to remain central to its long-term growth strategy.
Key exposures include distribution-channel concentration: Arrow generated 38% of quarterly revenue and represented approximately 33% of accounts receivable at June 30, 2023. About 45% of revenue came from outside the United States, exposing results to currency movements; management estimated that applying prior-year exchange rates would have increased quarterly revenue by $1.2 million. Approximately $194.1 million of cash was held outside the United States, where repatriation may be subject to restrictions or taxes.
The company classified its headquarters as held for sale at $38.7 million, based on estimated fair value less selling costs; the $40.0 million cash sale was expected to close in the second quarter of fiscal 2024, after which Commvault expects to lease part of the premises. The company reported no pending legal action expected to have a material adverse effect and no material changes to the risk factors in its fiscal 2023 Form 10-K. Disclosure controls were deemed effective; management noted the usual limits of internal controls.
