The nine-month provision for loan losses was $0.53 versus $0.35 in 2014. Noninterest expense was $25.46, including a $0.91 loss on debt prepayment; excluding that loss, expense declined 5.3% year over year.
Changes, credit quality and capital
- Loan balances rose 7.8% from year-end, including growth in municipal loans and commercial participations. Securities fell $55.09 million, partly as proceeds funded loan growth and a $10 million prepayment of long-term debt.
- The net interest margin contracted year over year as yields on loans and securities fell more than funding costs. Lower deposit and borrowing costs partly offset the decline.
- Nonperforming loans were $14.47 million, or 2.13% of loans; nonperforming assets were $15.83 million, or 1.28% of assets. The allowance was $7.42 million, 1.09% of loans. Impaired loans and troubled debt restructurings declined from year-end, to $9.78 million and $6.23 million, respectively.
- Regulatory capital ratios remained well above stated “well-capitalized” thresholds: consolidated total capital ratio 24.54%, common equity tier 1 ratio 23.39%, and Tier 1 leverage ratio 13.95%. Management said it expected capital to remain above required well-capitalized levels.
- The company declared $0.78 per share in dividends during the first nine months and repurchased 203,100 shares for $3.94 million. At quarter-end, 211,100 shares remained authorized for repurchase.
Outlook, risks and unusual items
- No specific earnings or revenue guidance was provided. Management said results for the interim periods may not indicate full-year results, and it believed liquidity was sufficient to meet short- and long-term obligations. Available credit facilities totaled $386.33 million, of which $369.99 million was unused.
- Management cited persistently low interest rates and possible rate increases as key uncertainties. The bank’s simulation showed a 23.7% decline in projected one-year net interest income under an immediate 400-basis-point increase, within its 25% policy limit. Actual results may differ from model estimates.
- Credit risks include local economic conditions, collateral values, and concentration in the bank’s regional market. Management highlighted participation loans, including leveraged loans to larger businesses, and continued close monitoring of commercial credits. A commercial borrower’s forbearance agreement was extended for 12 months in July 2015.
- A $0.91 million loss resulted from prepaying $10 million of higher-cost borrowing in Q2. Securities fair-value changes increased other comprehensive income by $2.04 million in Q3; the filing states securities impairment was considered temporary.
- The filing identifies interest-rate, economic, regulatory, competition and technology risks. Management reported no material change in previously disclosed risk factors, no material expected impact from pending litigation, and effective disclosure controls.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether loan growth, particularly municipal and participation lending, is matched by appropriate underwriting and sustained credit quality.
- Trends in net interest margin and asset yields if rates remain low or rise, including the assumptions behind interest-rate sensitivity modeling.
- Performance and collateral coverage of impaired loans, nonaccrual loans, TDRs and the commercial borrower under forbearance.
- Whether the allowance remains adequate as loan balances grow and economic or collateral conditions change.
- How securities valuations, borrowing prepayment risks, capital distribution restrictions and ongoing share repurchases affect future results and liquidity.
