  • Q2 net income rose 6.5%; first-half net income increased 11.5%. First-half return on average assets was 1.01% versus 1.11%; return on average equity was 11.19% versus 10.65%.
  • Net interest margin narrowed to 3.56% in Q2 from 3.70% a year earlier and to 3.59% for the first half from 3.78%. Lower funding costs and loan growth supported net interest income, while lower asset yields—including on Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans—pressured margin.
  • First-half operating cash flow was 5.51 versus 3.79. Investing activities used 65.78, while financing provided 84.81, principally reflecting deposit growth. Cash and cash equivalents ended the period at 104.46, up from 79.92 at year-end 2020.

Balance sheet, liquidity, and capital

  • At June 30, 2021, total assets were 1,219.1, net loans 869.3, deposits 1,099.4, and shareholders’ equity 107.6. Since December 31, 2020, assets grew 7.9%, net loans 4.8%, deposits 8.5%, and equity 2.4%.
  • Gross loans were 877.4, up 41.1 from year-end; loan growth excluding PPP balance changes was 74.1, or 9.82%. PPP loans outstanding were 48.2. Deposits grew mainly through noninterest-bearing and interest-bearing demand accounts.
  • Liquid assets were 395.9, equal to 35.62% of total liabilities, compared with 320.4 and 31.26% at year-end. The Bank reported no Federal Home Loan Bank advances outstanding at June 30; deposits were its principal funding source. Operating lease liabilities were 4.05.
  • The Bank reported regulatory capital ratios above well-capitalized thresholds: Tier 1 risk-based capital 11.44%, total risk-based capital 12.35%, and Tier 1 leverage 8.58%. The Bank did not elect the community bank leverage ratio framework.

Material changes and credit quality

  • First-half interest expense declined 54.1% year over year, while interest income rose 8.9%. Noninterest income increased 23.5%, including 0.36 in gains on loan sales and increased other operating income; securities-sale gains were lower than in 2020.
  • Noninterest expense rose 19.8% for the first half, led by salaries and benefits, which increased 18% as staffing rose from 189 to 213 full-time-equivalent employees. The first-half efficiency ratio improved to 67.07% from 68.47%; Q2 worsened to 67.83% from 65.45%.
  • The allowance for loan losses was 8.10, or 0.92% of loans, versus 7.10 and 0.85% at year-end. Nonperforming loans were 4.43; nonperforming assets were 0.61% of loans and OREO. The allowance was 182.71% of nonperforming loans. Management said the allowance was adequate but noted pandemic effects could require future increases.
  • There were 17 troubled debt restructuring loans totaling 2.8, including three nonaccrual loans totaling 0.81. Of 256 COVID-related deferrals approved in 2020 and the first half of 2021, 254 loans, totaling approximately 107.0 at June 30, had resumed payments after deferral or been paid off.

Outlook, risks, and contingencies

  • The filing gives no quantitative earnings or financial guidance. Management expected low rates and a flat yield curve to continue pressuring net interest income and margin.
  • COVID-19 remained a significant uncertainty, with potential effects on borrowers’ ability to repay, operations, demand, and estimates of credit losses. Management cited vaccine distribution and efficacy, variants, government intervention, and restrictions as relevant uncertainties.
  • Other stated risks include credit and collateral values, interest-rate changes, competition, growth execution, staffing, technology, regulation, and maintaining capital and cost control. The filing reported no material changes to previously disclosed risk factors, off-balance-sheet arrangements, contractual obligations, or market-risk disclosures, and no material pending legal proceedings.
  • Available-for-sale securities had a net unrealized gain of approximately 1.4 at June 30, down from 4.1 at year-end; the company attributed unrealized losses primarily to market interest rates and conditions, not issuer credit concerns. First-half other comprehensive loss was 2.16.

Investor verification priorities

  • Track loan growth, especially marine lending, consumer loans, commercial real estate exposure, and the decline in PPP balances.
  • Monitor margin and funding trends against management’s low-rate outlook, including the effects of PPP fee recognition and deposit pricing.
  • Assess credit migration, nonaccruals, deferrals, TDRs, and whether the allowance remains adequate as pandemic-related conditions evolve.
  • Understand the drivers and sustainability of higher personnel and operating expenses and the Q2 efficiency-ratio deterioration.
  • Verify capital and liquidity trends, securities valuation sensitivity to rates, and the effect of dividends and share repurchases.
