Material changes versus prior comparable period
- Revenue growth was led by materials processing, up 16.1%, and other applications, up 34.7%. High-power CW laser sales rose 17.3%, medium-power CW rose 22.8% and QCW rose 62.0%; pulsed-laser sales fell 5.1% amid pricing pressure and competition.
- Gross margin improved with favorable product mix, lower component costs and lower euro and ruble costs, partly offset by higher inventory and warranty provisions and slightly weaker fixed-cost absorption.
- R&D expense rose 18.6% to $63.3 million, supporting product and application development. Sales and marketing increased 4.0%; G&A increased 3.4%.
- Inventory rose to $203.7 million from $171.0 million. Inventory provisions were $15.4 million, compared with $11.3 million in 2014.
- Backlog increased to approximately $442.5 million from $321.0 million, including $185.1 million with firm shipment dates and $257.4 million under frame agreements.
Outlook, risks, contingencies and unusual items
- Management expected to ship a substantial majority of year-end backlog in 2016, while cautioning backlog is not necessarily indicative of future sales and orders are generally cancelable without substantial penalties.
- IPG expected 2016 capital expenditures of approximately $100–$110 million, excluding acquisitions, to expand and upgrade capacity. No specific revenue or earnings guidance was provided.
- Key exposures include cyclical customer capital spending, fixed manufacturing costs and inventory risk, declining average selling prices, competition, customer concentration, foreign exchange, and operations in China and Russia. Russia-related sanctions or supply disruptions could affect manufacturing and deliveries.
- A November 2015 patent-infringement lawsuit sought unspecified damages, treble damages and injunctive relief. IPG said it would contest the claims and recorded no liability; management reported no other legal proceeding expected to have a material financial-statement effect.
- Foreign-exchange gains were $2.6 million in earnings, while currency translation reduced other comprehensive income by $69.3 million. Warranty provisions increased to $22.8 million from $15.4 million; the year-end warranty accrual was $28.2 million.
- IPG said it expects to retain earnings and does not expect cash dividends in the foreseeable future. The audited financial statements and internal controls received unqualified audit opinions.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether backlog converts to shipments and revenue, particularly the non-firm frame-agreement portion.
- Whether China demand and the largest customer’s purchases remain strong, and how customer concentration evolves.
- Whether planned capacity spending supports demand without pressuring margins, utilization or cash generation.
- Trends in inventory, inventory provisions, warranty accruals and average selling prices.
- Developments in the patent litigation, Russia-related sanctions and currency exposures.
- Availability and use of cash held overseas; the filing states foreign earnings are intended to remain indefinitely reinvested.
