Sales fell across most product categories; Video Collaboration was the exception, up 2% for the quarter and 3% for the half year. For the quarter, PC Webcams fell 36%, Tablet & Other Accessories 33%, and Audio & Wearables 25%. EMEA sales declined 26%, Americas 9%, and Asia Pacific 2%. Management said constant-currency sales declines were 7% for the quarter and 8% for the half year.
Gross margin was pressured primarily by higher material costs and unfavorable currency movements. Operating expenses declined year over year, mainly due to lower marketing and selling and general and administrative expenses; however, restructuring charges increased.
Cash flow, liquidity and capital
- Six-month operating cash flow was $37 million, compared with cash used of $178 million a year earlier. The company cited $246 million of net cash outflow from changes in operating assets and liabilities.
- Investing activities used $54 million, including $45 million of property and equipment purchases. Financing activities used $416 million, including $238 million of share repurchases and $159 million of dividends.
- Cash and cash equivalents were $869 million at September 30, versus $1,329 million at March 31, 2022. Working capital was $1,448 million, down from $1,652 million.
- The balance sheet reports no borrowings under its $176 million of uncommitted, unsecured bank lines; $22 million of bank guarantees were outstanding under those lines. The filing reports no outstanding borrowing.
- Inventory was $880 million and accounts receivable was $773 million. Days sales outstanding rose to 61 from 50 a year earlier; inventory turnover declined to 3.2 from 3.7.
Material changes and unusual items
- Other expense for the quarter was $25 million, including a $21.4 million pretax impairment of an equity-method investment and currency-exchange losses. The filing reports a six-month net loss on investments of $11.6 million, partly offset by an investment gain.
- A restructuring plan initiated in the quarter to realign business and engineering structures generated $10.8 million in pretax charges, primarily severance and termination benefits. Logitech expects substantial completion within 12 months.
- The company increased its share repurchase authorization to $1.5 billion; $686 million remained available at September 30, 2022. It paid a $1.00-per-share dividend during the quarter.
- Unrecognized tax benefits were $174.9 million at quarter-end. Management said the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act was not expected to have a material financial-statement impact when effective.
Outlook, management commentary and risks
The filing provides no specific quarterly or full-year sales or EPS guidance. Management said it expects cash, operating cash generation and available borrowing capacity to be sufficient to fund operations for at least the next 12 months. Logitech noted that sales have historically been higher in its third fiscal quarter due to holiday and enterprise demand, but cautioned that seasonality is not a reliable forecast.
Management said supply-chain conditions, including logistics costs, shipping lead times and component availability, improved during the quarter. It nevertheless identified inflation, foreign-exchange volatility, rising interest rates, slower economic activity, lower consumer spending, the war in Ukraine, COVID-19-related disruption, and reliance on limited suppliers and manufacturing in China and Southeast Asia as risks to demand, costs and product availability. A stronger U.S. dollar weighed on reported sales and margins.
As of September 30, the company had $589.5 million of non-cancelable inventory purchase commitments, mostly expected to be fulfilled within 12 months, and a $46.1 million liability for purchase commitments considered excessive relative to anticipated demand or net realizable value. Logitech disclosed several ordinary-course legal claims and proceedings; it did not expect their resolution to materially adversely affect results based on information then available, while noting litigation uncertainty.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether demand stabilizes and elevated inventory, receivables and purchase commitments convert into sales and cash without further margin pressure.
- How much of the sales and margin decline reflects currency and material costs, and whether hedging or pricing actions offset those effects.
- The assumptions and future financial impact of the $21.4 million investment impairment and the progress and costs of the restructuring plan.
- Whether operating cash flow improves after substantial shareholder distributions and the decline in cash balances.
- The concentration and terms of major customer relationships; the filing says three customers each represented at least 10% of sales in the current quarter and half year.
