At September 30, cash and cash equivalents were $7.353B, short-term investments were $0.514B, and cash, cash equivalents, restricted cash and short-term investments totaled $7.871B. Debt, net of issuance costs, was $14.300B ($0.400B current and $13.901B long-term). Principal and interest of $1.068B were due within 12 months; the $1B revolving credit facility was undrawn. Netflix reported covenant compliance.

Paid memberships at quarter-end were 247.153M, up 11% year over year, with 8.763M net additions in Q3. Average monthly revenue per paying membership was $11.70, down 1%. Streaming revenue rose 8% in Q3; regional growth was strongest in EMEA (+13%) and Latin America (+12%), while APAC average revenue per membership declined 9%.

Changes versus comparable periods

  • Q3 revenue increased 8%, operating income increased 25%, and operating margin expanded 3 percentage points. Management attributed margin improvement mainly to revenue growth outpacing cost growth, lower marketing and technology and development costs, partly offset by higher general and administrative costs.
  • Q3 net income rose about 20%; diluted EPS increased from $3.10 to $3.73. Nine-month net income was nearly flat despite 5% revenue growth, in part because interest and other income fell substantially year over year.
  • Nine-month operating cash flow and free cash flow increased sharply, primarily because content cash payments fell 25% to $9.660B. The filing notes that content payment timing and amortization can differ materially.
  • Netflix repurchased 9.036M shares for $3.545B during the first nine months. The board added $10B to the repurchase authorization in September; $10.9B remained available at quarter-end.

Outlook, risks and unusual items

  • Management said operating cash flow, available funds and financing access are expected to cover cash needs for the next 12 months and beyond. The filing does not provide a specific forward revenue or earnings forecast.
  • The WGA strike ended September 27, 2023; the SAG-AFTRA strike was ongoing at quarter-end. Netflix paused and expected to pause additional productions, which could delay production payments and increase their variability.
  • Known content obligations totaled $19.650B, including $9.512B payable within one year. These exclude unknown future-title obligations; management estimated these could be approximately $1B–$4B over the next three years, with most payments expected after the next 12 months.
  • Netflix began using foreign-exchange forward contracts in Q3 to hedge forecast revenue and content-related exposures. Hedging may reduce, but does not eliminate, currency risk. Foreign currencies represented 57% of nine-month revenue; management estimated revenue would have been $568M higher at prior-year exchange rates.
  • Interest and other income was $168M in Q3 versus $261M a year earlier and $124M for nine months versus $677M, mainly reflecting changes in foreign-exchange gains and losses. Euro-denominated debt remeasurement contributed non-cash gains of $173M in Q3 and $63M for nine months.
  • Content assets were $31.750B at quarter-end. The DVD-by-mail service ended September 29, 2023, with an immaterial effect on results. Routine litigation and tax examinations remain; the company said an unfavorable material legal outcome could adversely affect operations or financial condition. Gross unrecognized tax benefits were $213M, and the possible range of examination-related changes was not estimable.
  • The company reported no material change in previously disclosed risk factors, effective disclosure controls, and no material change in internal control over financial reporting during the quarter.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether subscriber growth and revenue per membership trends—especially in APAC and other lower-revenue regions—support sustainable revenue growth.
  • How production disruptions affect content releases, content cash payments, and future operating margins after the SAG-AFTRA strike.
  • Whether reported cash generation is maintained as content payment timing normalizes, and how it compares with content amortization.
  • The scale and timing of known and unknown content commitments, debt maturities, and other contractual cash needs.
  • Future share repurchases, foreign-exchange impacts and hedge effectiveness, and developments in tax examinations and litigation.
