Revenue and material changes
- Omnipod: Revenue was $357.6 million, up 32.7%. U.S. revenue rose 48.8% to $259.0 million, driven by customer growth, Omnipod 5 conversions and pharmacy-channel sales. International revenue increased 3.4% to $98.6 million; excluding unfavorable currency effects, it grew 9.6%.
- Related-party sales: Revenue from a related-party distributor was $96.8 million, versus $48.4 million. The filing says the distributor agreement has arm’s-length terms; the distributor accounted for 28% of total revenue.
- Drug Delivery: Revenue fell to $0.5 million from $25.9 million, reflecting lower partner demand. This decline partly offset Omnipod growth.
- Margin and spending: Cost of revenue grew 37.2%, faster than revenue. Management attributed lower gross margin primarily to Omnipod 5 production costs, the U.S. manufacturing ramp and lower Drug Delivery production, with additional effects from warranty, inventory and inflation. R&D rose 16.2% and SG&A rose 26.4%, including higher customer-support, staffing and systems costs.
Liquidity, debt and cash flow
Quarter-end total assets were $2.29 billion and stockholders’ equity was $502.8 million. Cash and cash equivalents were $620.7 million; the company also reported $15.2 million of restricted cash in other assets. Net cash from operations was nearly flat, as working-capital needs—including a planned inventory build, prepaid inventory costs and longer pharmacy-channel receivable terms—absorbed cash. Investing activities used $42.1 million, including $25.1 million for acquired patent assets and $3.0 million to complete a prior acquisition. Financing activities used $12.1 million. No amount was drawn on the $100 million revolving credit facility at quarter end. Management stated existing liquidity was expected to cover projected operating, investing and debt-service needs for at least 12 months.
Outlook, commentary and risks
- Management expected full-year 2023 gross margin of 65%–66%. It anticipated U.S. Omnipod growth, continued international Omnipod growth, and a $26 million–$32 million decline in Drug Delivery revenue.
- Management expected R&D and SG&A spending to increase in 2023; capital expenditures were expected to decrease versus 2022. It expected 2023 gross margin to be affected by inflation, U.S. manufacturing scale-up and Omnipod 5 costs.
- The 2022 voluntary corrections for DASH PDM battery issues and Omnipod 5 Controller charging issues remain relevant. At March 31, 2023, the estimated related liability was $31.0 million; the company reduced its overall estimate by $8.0 million in Q1, primarily for lower expected shipping and distribution costs. Management expected correction-related replacement obligations to weigh on 2023 results, particularly in the first half.
- Management cited continuing supply-chain challenges, which it said it had mitigated through higher inventory and other measures. Other stated risks include reliance on the Omnipod platform, reimbursement and market access, competition from automated insulin-delivery systems, supplier and manufacturing concentration, product safety and regulatory matters, and the ability to scale operations.
- Management planned Omnipod 5 launches in the U.K. and Germany in 2023 and broader international rollout in 2024. Production at the Malaysia manufacturing facility was expected to begin in 2024. FDA clearance for Omnipod GO was received in April 2023, after the quarter; commercialization was expected in 2024. A $24 million manufacturing-equipment financing transaction was also entered into in May 2023.
- The company reported no material changes to the risk factors in its 2022 Form 10-K. It said ongoing legal proceedings were not expected to have a material adverse effect, individually or in aggregate.
