Interest income rose 12.2% to $5.202 million, supported by loan growth, while interest expense increased 7.2% to $0.610 million. Average yield on interest-earning assets fell to 4.99% from 5.19%; management attributed the higher net interest income to higher average loan balances. The filing does not provide a separate total revenue figure; net interest income plus noninterest income was $5.377 million, versus $5.433 million a year earlier.
Material changes and credit quality
- Loan balances, excluding loans held for sale, grew 1.0% from year-end to $396.138 million. Commercial business loans rose 48.3% to $20.266 million as the Bank pursued portfolio diversification; commercial and multifamily real estate remained the largest portfolio category.
- Nonperforming assets declined to $2.214 million, or 0.50% of assets, from $3.099 million, or 0.70%, at year-end, mainly reflecting lower OREO. Nonaccrual loans increased to $0.758 million from $0.558 million, while OREO and repossessed assets fell to $0.353 million from $1.178 million.
- The allowance for loan losses was $4.176 million, 1.06% of loans. Net charge-offs were $0.201 million, compared with $0.452 million in Q1 2013. TDRs totaled $6.5 million; one new TDR of $0.176 million was recorded in the quarter.
- Deposits rose 4.3%, with management citing retail and marketing efforts and a focus on core deposits. FHLB advances fell $15.2 million; their reported weighted-average cost was 0.53% at both quarter-end and year-end.
- Noninterest income fell chiefly because loan-sale gains declined to $0.076 million from $0.447 million and mortgage servicing income moved to a $0.047 million loss from $0.127 million of income. Salaries and benefits increased 22.5%, partly offset by lower OREO costs and regulatory assessments.
Liquidity, capital, outlook and risks
At March 31, the Bank reported $29.3 million in cash and available-for-sale securities and $1.4 million in loans held for sale. Additional stated borrowing capacity included $55.9 million of FHLB advances, $19.1 million through the Federal Reserve discount window, and lines of $9.0 million and $2.0 million. Outstanding loan commitments, unused lines and letters of credit totaled $61.9 million; certificates of deposit due within one year totaled $97.4 million. Management said it expected most maturing deposits to remain, based on competitive pricing. The parent company separately had $0.471 million in cash and liquid investments.
The Bank was classified as well-capitalized. Its reported ratios were 10.15% Tier 1 capital to average assets, 12.95% Tier 1 capital to risk-weighted assets, and 14.16% total capital to risk-weighted assets. The filing gives no specific earnings or growth guidance. Management noted that interim results are not necessarily indicative of full-year results.
Key disclosed risks include changes in economic conditions, interest rates, real estate values, loan demand and credit performance; access to cost-effective deposits and funding; regulatory actions and capital requirements; and valuation uncertainty for securities and mortgage servicing rights. The $2.4 million non-agency mortgage-backed securities portfolio carries greater credit risk than agency securities; no OTTI charge was recorded in Q1, but management warned further deterioration could require impairment and materially affect earnings, equity, capital or operations. Market-rate and prepayment assumptions also affect servicing-rights fair values. The company reported no off-balance-sheet transactions expected to have a material effect and said ordinary-course legal proceedings were not expected to have a material adverse effect.
Other notable items: the company completed its authorized repurchase of 129,340 shares on March 11, 2014, including 53,340 shares repurchased during the quarter for $0.904 million. A quarterly cash dividend of $0.05 per share was declared April 29, payable May 27. Share-based compensation expense increased to $0.198 million from $0.043 million. Management reported effective disclosure controls and no material change in internal control over financial reporting.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Reconcile the filing’s different nonperforming-loan ratios: MD&A reports 0.47% at March 31 in its year-over-year discussion, while the quarter-end balance and other comparisons imply a different ratio.
- Review the commercial real estate and multifamily exposures, including the three largest nonperforming commercial real estate loans totaling $0.780 million, and assess the direction of delinquencies and criticized loans.
- Assess the concentration and impairment sensitivity of non-agency mortgage-backed securities, including the $0.321 million unrealized loss and management’s cash-flow assumptions.
- Monitor the sustainability of earnings: lower mortgage activity reduced servicing income and loan-sale gains, while salaries and benefits and share-based compensation increased.
- Evaluate funding coverage against $61.9 million of commitments and $97.4 million of certificates maturing within one year, including the availability and collateral conditions on borrowing capacity.
- Confirm the impact of the completed share repurchase, outstanding equity awards, and subsequent $0.05 dividend on per-share results and capital.
