  • Revenue mix: Product revenue was $311.4 million (+20.6%) and service revenue was $84.9 million (+29.0%). Paint protection film contributed $229.9 million (+19.5%); window film contributed $68.0 million (+25.0%). Installation labor revenue rose 36.5% to $58.5 million.
  • Margins and expenses: Product gross margin improved to 36.4% from 34.2%, attributed to lower product costs, favorable mix and operating leverage. Service gross margin declined to 57.7% from 59.6%, largely due to a greater share of lower-margin installation labor. Operating expenses increased 29.7% to $95.4 million, faster than revenue, including higher staffing, occupancy, IT, research and development, and professional costs.
  • Cash and liquidity: Cash and cash equivalents were $11.6 million at year-end, versus $8.1 million. Operating cash flow increased substantially, principally with higher earnings and reduced inventory purchases. Investing used $26.4 million, including acquisition spending; financing used $7.3 million, mainly net debt repayments. Current assets were $146.5 million and current liabilities $36.5 million.
  • Debt and obligations: Year-end revolving credit borrowings were $19.0 million, down from $26.0 million; the company reported approximately $109.4 million available under its credit facilities. The $125 million secured revolving facility matures April 6, 2026; year-end borrowing rates were 6.4%–6.5%, depending on the selected rate option. XPEL reported compliance with its debt covenants. Lease liabilities totaled $16.7 million. Management said it expected adequate liquidity for at least 12 months from the filing date.
  • Balance sheet: Total assets were $252.0 million, total liabilities $72.1 million and stockholders’ equity $180.0 million. Inventory was $106.5 million, up from $80.6 million in 2022.

Material changes versus FY2022

  • Revenue growth was broad-based, with estimated regional sales increasing 18.4% in the United States, 11.6% in Canada, 22.3% in China and 41.2% in continental Europe. International sales represented approximately 43% of revenue.
  • Gross margin and net margin improved, while operating expenses grew faster than revenue. Net income increased 27.6% and diluted EPS rose from $1.50 to $1.91.
  • Operating cash flow rose to $37.4 million from $12.1 million. The company spent more on acquisitions, with investing cash outflow increasing to $26.4 million from $14.2 million.
  • Four acquisitions were completed in 2023 for aggregate purchase consideration of $20.8 million. Purchase accounting remained preliminary at year-end, including valuation of acquired intangible assets and working-capital adjustments. The acquired businesses contributed $4.8 million revenue and $0.4 million net income in 2023.

Outlook, risks and unusual items

  • Outlook: The filing provides no numerical revenue, earnings or margin guidance. Management described continued global expansion, acquisitions, growth in non-automotive products and maintaining positive operating cash generation as strategic priorities, and stated that it expected sufficient liquidity for near-term needs.
  • Key business risks: Demand depends substantially on the automotive industry and discretionary consumer spending. XPEL relies on third-party suppliers and contract manufacturers under an asset-light model, and faces product-quality, supply availability, cost and competitive risks. A single China distributor accounted for 10.5% of 2023 revenue; disruption or loss of that relationship could materially affect results.
  • Other exposures: International operations expose the company to currency movements, trade restrictions, tariffs, political and regulatory uncertainty, and compliance risks. Variable-rate debt creates interest-rate exposure; the filing says a hypothetical 200-basis-point rate increase could materially affect the financial statements. The company does not currently hedge currency translation or interest-rate risk.
  • Contingencies and estimates: Management said material litigation impact was remote, while noting ordinary-course claims could produce unforeseen costs. The warranty liability reserve was $0.4 million at year-end. Inventory valuation, acquisition purchase-price allocations, goodwill and other estimates involve management judgment.
  • Other notable disclosures: No shares were repurchased in 2023 and no cash dividends are anticipated in the foreseeable future. Management and the auditor concluded internal control over financial reporting was effective; prior cybersecurity incidents had not materially affected the company.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether growth and improved product margins continue as product mix, pricing, costs and competitive conditions change.
  • Whether the elevated inventory balance converts to sales and cash without material obsolescence or write-downs.
  • Final purchase-price allocations and subsequent performance of the four 2023 acquisitions, including integration costs and acquired-business contribution.
  • Continued performance and stability of the sole China distributor, and the company’s exposure to China and other international markets.
  • Available borrowing capacity, variable interest rates, covenant compliance and cash requirements for acquisitions, leases and other commitments.
  • Whether installation-service growth can be sustained while service gross margin remains below the prior-year level.
