Material changes versus the prior comparable period

  • Sales increased 4.6%, reflecting unit growth partly offset by unfavorable foreign exchange. Excluding currency effects, sales increased 5.9%.

  • HUMIRA sales increased 23% in the United States and 14% internationally. Vascular sales were affected by the wind-down of certain royalty and supply agreements, including Promus.
  • Gross margin improved primarily because of favorable product mix and improved margins across all reportable segments.
  • Research and development expense increased 8.1%, while selling, general and administrative expense increased 5.3%.
  • Net earnings benefited from approximately $60 million of income from the resolution of a contractual agreement and from the absence of the $137 million accounting-change charge recorded in the first quarter of 2011.
