Material changes versus the prior comparable year
- Revenue rose 52% and profit increased substantially, reflecting the first full year of FWGR production, a 14% increase in gold sold, and a 33% increase in the average rand gold price received.
- Total production rose 12% to 174,385 oz. FWGR produced 46,136 oz; Ergo production fell 11% to 128,249 oz, affected by COVID-19 restrictions, ramp-up and power interruptions.
- Operating cash flow increased to R1,128.9m. Cash increased mainly because of operating cash generation and R1,085.6m raised from Sibanye-Stillwater’s share subscription; dividends paid were R564.5m.
- All-in sustaining cost per kilogram rose 3%, while all-in cost per kilogram fell 8%, reflecting higher sustaining capital expenditure but lower growth capital expenditure.
- Administration expenses and other costs rose to R309.9m, including R218.1m of cash-settled share-based payment expense, primarily from remeasurement as DRDGOLD’s share price increased.
- Ore reserves decreased slightly to 5.725m oz from 5.770m oz, after depletion and removal of one dump from reserves, partly offset by the addition of Marievale dumps.
Outlook, risks, contingencies and unusual items
- FY2021 guidance: production of 165,000–185,000 oz and cash operating costs of approximately R535,000/kg. Management cautioned that lockdowns, infections, supply interruptions, power constraints, grades and recoveries could affect targets.
- Growth plans: FWGR Phase 2 feasibility work was underway for a proposed central processing plant with capacity of 1.2–2.4 million tonnes per month and a new regional tailings facility. The report anticipated feasibility studies in the first half of FY2021; timing, cost and returns remain uncertain. Management also expected Brakpan/Withok authorisation work could add approximately 800Mt of deposition capacity, subject to required amendments.
- COVID-19: Ergo and FWGR temporarily halted operations on March 26, 2020 and restarted progressively in April and May. The pandemic also supported higher gold prices, which could decline as conditions change.
- Market and operating risks: results are exposed to gold prices and the rand/US dollar exchange rate; the company generally remains unhedged. Other material risks include electricity and water availability and costs, labor, reserve replacement, tailings-facility integrity, environmental obligations, crime and production disruptions.
- Contingencies: the Ekurhuleni municipality electricity-tariff dispute includes two municipal claims of R74.0m and R31.6m; DRDGOLD also claims recovery of approximately R43m in previously paid surcharges. The company recognized R35.0m for payments made under protest. A separate occupational lung-disease class action remains unresolved; potential claimants and damages were not quantified. The filing says a reliable estimate cannot be made for a possible environmental liability related to acid mine drainage.
- Environmental obligations: the recorded rehabilitation provision was R568.9m, with estimated undiscounted costs of R752.5m. Rehabilitation funding requirements and regulatory changes could affect future cash needs.
- Audit and controls: KPMG issued unqualified opinions on the IFRS financial statements and internal control over financial reporting. Management also concluded disclosure controls were effective at June 30, 2020.
Most important facts for investors to verify
- Confirm the period: FY2020 ended June 30, 2020; this filing does not report 2019 Q4 separately.
- Review how much FY2020 earnings and cash generation depended on elevated gold prices, currency movements, and the full-year contribution from FWGR.
- Track FWGR Phase 2 feasibility, financing, capital commitments, permitting and construction schedule against the proposed scale and capacity.
- Assess the status and potential financial consequences of the Ekurhuleni tariff litigation, occupational lung-disease litigation and rehabilitation obligations.
- Check FY2021 production and cost performance against guidance, particularly given COVID-19, power, water, labor and supply-chain risks.
- Review the R218.1m share-based payment charge and the effect of Sibanye-Stillwater’s 50.1% ownership on governance and minority shareholders.
