Sales rose 3%, primarily from acquisitions; acquisitions added four percentage points, foreign exchange reduced sales by about one point, and organic sales were essentially flat. Adverse weather weighed on demand. Gross and operating margins improved as productivity and price realization more than offset cost inflation; Q1 2013 also included approximately $1.9 million of facility-closure costs. Higher taxes and foreign-currency transaction losses more than offset increased operating income, reducing Hubbell-attributable net income 3% and diluted EPS 2%. The effective tax rate was 32.0%, versus 26.8%.

Segments: Electrical sales increased 5% to $538.8; operating income rose 11% to $68.1 and margin improved to 12.6% from 12.0%. Power sales declined 2% to $220.7; operating income increased 2% to $36.7 and margin improved to 16.6% from 16.1%. Electrical growth reflected acquisitions and favorable pricing, while organic volume was flat. Power sales were affected by weaker construction-related demand, adverse currency and negative price realization.

Acquisitions, outlook and notable matters

  • Q1 acquisitions were Powerohm Resistors, Pen-Cell and Fiber and Cable Accessories, for total net cash consideration of $90.9. They added $48.9 of goodwill and $31.8 of intangible assets; their reported-quarter results were not significant.
  • For 2014, management expected net sales growth of 5%–6%, with acquisitions contributing 3%–4%. It forecast end-market growth of approximately 2%–3%, including double-digit residential growth, low-single-digit industrial and non-residential growth, and a flat utility market.
  • Management expected operating-margin expansion of approximately 20–30 basis points, a tax rate of about 32.5%, and free cash flow approximately equal to net income. It planned continued productivity and growth investment, with capital deployment emphasizing acquisitions.
