Financial performance and position

  • Q2 revenue and earnings: Interest income was $1.106 billion, up 3% year over year; net interest income was $887 million, up from $840 million. Net income fell to $209 million from $350 million, and diluted EPS was $1.68 versus $2.60.
  • First-half results: Interest income was $2.195 billion versus $2.130 billion; net income was $510 million versus $763 million; diluted EPS was $4.04 versus $5.67. Pretax income was $676 million, compared with $1.010 billion.
  • Credit costs and portfolio: Provision for finance receivable losses was $339 million in Q2 and $577 million in the first half, versus $132 million and $130 million, respectively, in 2021. Management attributed the increase primarily to portfolio growth and higher net charge-offs, compared with a prior-year allowance release. The Q2 net charge-off ratio was 5.95% versus 4.40%; yield was 23.13% versus 24.21%. Personal-loan 30–89-day delinquency was 2.73%, compared with 1.76% a year earlier. The allowance was $2.127 billion, or 10.94% of finance receivables.
  • Portfolio growth: Finance receivables were $19.448 billion at June 30, 2022, compared with $19.212 billion at year-end 2021. Personal-loan originations were $3.897 billion in Q2, up from $3.835 billion; credit-card receivables were $64 million across approximately 79,000 open accounts.
  • Cash flow: First-half operating cash flow was $1.178 billion, versus $1.130 billion. Investing cash outflow was $802 million and financing cash outflow was $333 million. Cash and cash equivalents were $526 million, with an additional $534 million of restricted cash; $151 million of cash was unavailable for general corporate purposes.
  • Debt and liquidity: Long-term debt was $17.922 billion, up from $17.750 billion at December 31, 2021. The company reported $9.6 billion of unencumbered loans, $5.3 billion of remaining conduit capacity and a $1.25 billion unsecured corporate revolver with no borrowings. Management said it expected adequate liquidity for at least 24 months.
  • Capital returns: OneMain repurchased 4.38 million shares for $204 million in the first half and declared dividends of $1.90 per share. On July 27, 2022, it declared a further $0.95-per-share dividend.

Material changes and unusual items

  • Earnings declined as sharply higher credit-loss provisions outweighed growth in interest income and lower interest expense. Average funding costs declined, while average debt increased.
  • Q2 included a $26 million loss related to redeeming OMFC’s 8.875% senior notes due 2025; the company paid $637 million, including accrued interest and premiums, to complete the redemption.
  • Unrealized losses on available-for-sale securities reduced first-half other comprehensive income by $131 million, net of tax. Management said these losses primarily reflected interest-rate and market-spread changes, not credit impairment, and reported no plans to sell the affected securities before recovery of amortized cost.
  • New funding included a $600 million social securitization and $350 million of private secured term funding. The company also completed a $600 million auto-loan securitization.

Outlook, risks and contingencies

  • The filing provides no specific earnings or growth guidance. Management said it was monitoring inflation, unemployment, geopolitical events, interest rates and other macroeconomic conditions; changes in assumptions or credit performance could further affect the allowance and provision.
  • Management emphasized disciplined underwriting, liquidity, capital coverage, digital capabilities and continued investment in the business. It described personal-loan demand as seasonal, generally higher in Q2 and Q4, and delinquencies as tending to rise later in the year.
  • In March 2022, CFPB staff notified OneMain that it was considering recommending legal action concerning alleged violations related to refunds for optional insurance and membership products canceled after purchase. The company said it was cooperating, disputed that it violated the law and could not estimate the investigation’s duration or outcome; potential remedies could include penalties, restitution or injunctive relief.
  • Other key risks include worsening customer delinquencies or defaults, unemployment and bankruptcies, capital-market access and refinancing, non-investment-grade credit ratings, regulatory actions, cyber and operational disruptions, and the adequacy of credit models and loss reserves.
  • The company reported no material off-balance-sheet arrangements. It also reported that disclosure controls were effective and that no material change in internal control occurred during the quarter.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether the macroeconomic assumptions used in the loss forecast remain reasonable and whether further reserve changes are needed.
  • How the CFPB investigation develops, including any enforcement action, potential remedies or financial exposure.
  • Whether liquidity, funding access and debt refinancing remain adequate as rates, credit performance and market conditions change.
  • The sustainability of the dividend and pace of share repurchases relative to earnings, cash generation, capital needs and debt levels.
