  • Revenue mix and growth: Organic revenue growth was 3%; acquisitions contributed 18 percentage points and currency translation reduced growth by 2 points. Product revenue was $8,017 and service revenue was $3,801. COVID-19 testing product sales were $1,680 versus $2,450 a year earlier.
  • Segment revenue: Life Sciences Solutions $4,231; Analytical Instruments $1,518; Specialty Diagnostics $1,482; Laboratory Products and Biopharma Services $5,442, before eliminations. PPD contributed $1,660 of quarterly revenue.
  • Cash flow and investment: Capital expenditures were $640. Operating cash flow benefited from income but was reduced by working-capital investment, including a $499 inventory cash use. Free cash flow is a non-GAAP measure and does not deduct debt service or other non-discretionary obligations.
  • Liquidity and debt: Cash and cash equivalents were $2,752 at April 2, down from $4,477 at year-end 2021. Total debt was $33,255, including $1,866 of short-term obligations and current maturities; long-term obligations were $31,389. The company had no revolver borrowings under its $5,000 facility, with about $4 of capacity reserved for letters of credit. Management said cash, operating cash flow, and borrowing capacity should meet existing-business needs for at least 24 months.
  • Margins and earnings: Management attributed lower margins primarily to recent acquisitions, lower COVID testing volumes, strategic growth investments, sales mix, and higher acquisition-related amortization; strong pricing and productivity improvements partly offset these pressures. GAAP diluted EPS also reflects $141 of net investment losses and $26 of early debt-extinguishment losses within other income/expense.

Material changes versus the prior period

  • Revenue increased 19%, but organic growth was only 3%; acquisitions were the principal source of reported growth. PPD, acquired in December 2021, materially expanded Laboratory Products and Biopharma Services revenue.
  • COVID-related testing demand weakened: testing product sales fell to $1,680 from $2,450, contributing to declines in Specialty Diagnostics and parts of Life Sciences Solutions.
  • Segment income margin declined in Life Sciences Solutions (54.2% to 51.4%), Specialty Diagnostics (26.5% to 23.9%), and Laboratory Products and Biopharma Services (14.8% to 11.4%); Analytical Instruments improved slightly, to 19.8% from 19.6%.
  • Operating cash flow and free cash flow rose year over year, while cash balances declined, reflecting financing and capital allocation activity. The company repurchased $2,000 of shares and paid $103 in dividends; it repaid $375 of debt and had net commercial-paper repayments.

Outlook, risks, contingencies, and unusual items

  • Outlook: Management expected positive impacts from COVID-related products and services to continue through 2022, but said the duration and extent were uncertain and depended mainly on testing, therapy, and vaccine demand. It forecast 2022 GAAP tax rate of 10%–12%, adjusted tax rate of 13%–13.5%, cash income-tax payments of approximately $1,350, and capital expenditures net of disposals of $2,500–$2,700.
  • Operating environment: The filing identifies potential inflationary pressure, supply-chain disruption, uncertain economic conditions, customer and government funding decisions, foreign exchange movements, regulatory changes, and acquisition integration/benefit realization as risks. Management cited strong pharma/biotech demand, favorable academic and government funding, and robust industrial demand, including semiconductor and materials-science markets.
  • Restructuring: Q1 restructuring and other costs were $2. Management had identified approximately $15 of additional restructuring charges, primarily in 2022, and anticipated identifying further actions. Accrued restructuring costs were $12 at quarter-end.
  • Contingencies: The company reported ongoing environmental remediation matters and ordinary-course product liability, intellectual property, employment, commercial, and other proceedings. It reported no material changes to previously disclosed accruals and no material losses deemed probable for the described pending matters, but noted an unfavorable outcome could materially affect results, financial position, or cash flows.
  • Other notable items: The company redeemed its 3.650% senior notes due 2025, recording $26 of extinguishment losses. It reported a Russian affiliate’s legally authorized response to an FSB inquiry concerning a medical-device instrument; the interaction generated no revenue or net income for the quarter.
